I don’t think Sarko will change much of anything. It will be all talk much like things were under Chirac’s reign and not much, if any, positive change. Actually, I expect more racial tensions and riots in the banlieues around France. A lot of the people in the banlieues don’t have any pride and don’t want to be French.
Sarko said:
"I want to give French people back the pride of being French -- to finish with repentance, which is a form of self-hate," he said, renouncing a pervasive national malaise fed by economic decline at home and sinking influence abroad
Our CBS news announced tonight that Sarko won despite all the mistresses and affairs he has had. One French commentator said that the French love a politician with *sexual power* and that it is widely accepted in France for a politician to have numerous extra-marital affairs. That commentator added “the more sexual power a man has the better leader he will make using his political power.”
Sarko’s defeated opponent, Segolene Royal, isn’t exactly a weakling when it comes to sexual power. She’s had four (4) kids out of wedlock and is young enough to have more.
President George Bush has not demonstrated any sexual power during his presidency and that could be the real reason why the French don’t like him.
One thing for sure, I'm not watching CBS if I come to the USA
Come one, what is that nonsense ?
Sarkozy has had problems with his marriage (he said like most families he had the good and the bad moments) and it was on "people magazines" a year ago I think. Its his second marriage, that is part of life I think.
Regarding Segolène Royal , she has been elected one of France's sexiest women ( don't know how they do those votes ).
And during relationships, the fact that Royal is living with Francois Hollande ( Director of the Socialist Parti ) has been mediatised a lot.
And the fact that he has had mistresses (I don't know and honestly what has it got to do with politics ?) : WHO CARES ? I really think that one judging on things like this is stupid.
Regarding Georges W Bush, well I don't think it has anything to do with that, we judge on ideas and actions not personal life (at least people with reason do that). French don't like him for several reasons, I remember when he got elected , people were criticizing him for the pro death penalty (Hey ! we are a very philosophic country !) but Iraq is the main reason (I have to say it: see we were right ).
PS: I hope Sarkozy says something about what happened after elections, protests like these can not be tolerated !
I don't believe that Americans are jealous of the French. In fact most Americans don't even give the French a second thought.
I find it rather amusing that most French people strongly dislike President George W Bush but yet a majority of them just elected 'le copain de George W Bush' as their next president.

It's quite alright SouthsideShrek, most French people don't really think about Americans either. I suspect people who voted for Sarkozy had something else on their mind than the Texan village idiot who heads the US. Glad it amuses you though, Europe and the rest of the world are still in stitches at people who voted not once but twice for Dubya.
Si I guess we're all having a really good laugh at each other's misfortune !!
All right now, this is just becoming a shouting match. I suggest both sides cool off and remember their manners -- making snide comments about one another's countries doesn't help anyone.
I've worked with the Americans and the french in the same office before. We all got along very well. The only problem was probably the language barriers given the fact that most americans talk real fast. I think stereotype is one thing until you actually meet the people in person thats when you break the pre-conception and realise how wrong you were. I'd say Americans or French who do not go abroad might be slightly narrow minded I suppose.
Mooseketeer, you say you are French,if so then I cant dislike all French people cause I like you.
America and France has politically been at odds at times, that has created the tension. And like said, the impressions we get from sources, which are probably many times wrong.I have never been there so I cant say first hand whether French dislike Americans in general.I will say on other international forums I have been on,most around the world were cool with me,even while they disagree with me while often French and Spain members lashed out at me.
The thing is regarding social benefits is alot of us Americans view government totally different then europeans in general. While you are shocked by our lack of social benefits we tend to dismiss the old world belief in monarchy and that community needs outway individual needs. While europeans take pride in "free" government services, the fact is there is nothing free in this world, your paychecks are deducted for this, you have little power to do what you want to do with your money that you worked for..
To each there own,Im not blasting europeans system, but I do blast Americans who want to do away with our system in favor of socialism. All is not perfect in America that for sure, but most of us take nationalistic pride on the Bill of Rights limiting government intrusion into citizens lives.
In the end though,I judge people individually based on them as a person no matter where they came from.Im glad to know you.
cheers
