Weekend in Island (Iceland) (best, country, places, moving) - City-Data Forum

I'm moving from Sweden to NYC in early 2010 and will be having a one night layover in Reykjavik, Island.

I've been there one other time, for a 1s hours or so on a layover. My GF and I went to the Blue Lagoon and had a pretty good time. This was in August 2007.

My GF booked our trip through Reykjavik this time because she wanted to go back to the Blue Lagoon again.

We're trying to find some other things to do while we are there. We get in 15:00 on a Saturday and leave 16:00 on Sunday.

While she's content to spend the whole trip at Blue Lagoon, I'd prefer to do something we haven't done before. We're hoping it'll be clear skies so we can head out of the city and possibly see the Northern Lights. I'd also love to get out in the nature and see all the geothermal wonders. The helicopter tours have also caught my eye...

Just wondering if anyone has been to Island and can offer any recommendations for a quick weekend there. Places to stay, things to do, things to see.

You must mean Iceland. There is no country Island.

To get back on topic.. how many hours will you have free (none blue lagoon time). I can ask a friend from ISLAND/ICELAND for you. Great time to go, especially with the devaluation of the krona! And as a former resident of Manhattan.. I'm jealous of your move to NYc! I love NY!

As I said we're there total about 13 hours-a couple of which we'll need to sleep.

If there is something spectacular that we should do/see then we can skip the Lagoon all together. Or we could go either the afternoon on Sat or the morning on Sun.

We're looking at some guided tours but most of them leave too early Sat and would get us back to the plane too late on Sunday.

If your friend knows places to stay or about renting cars, that could be helpful too.

im too jealous that youre moving to NYC!!

i had a stopover in reykjavik while going from bergen to nyc this summer

i stayed there 1 night. didnt really do much. went to "perlan" which is an obervatory where you can eat food (best slush ever!!)

tbh i found reykjavik and iceland in generally to be really boring.. especially the trip from the airport. i swear, it feels like it never ends and the view is so boring. ugh. theres not really much to see in the city center, either. the main shopping street is OK. its not much, but atleast its something.

i guess i didnt help much!
