I went there once when I was 9. I don't remember specifics, but there was a beautiful park near the city center with large glasshouse. The city center was nice too...I remember a big square, lots of hills and a circular skyscraper. The outskirts seemed quite industrial though. We ate at a McDonald's inside a large mall.

Lyon has a beautiful city center, one if the best old town of large french cities (vieux Lyon), it had also modern districts, two rivers, good food, hills, roman ruins, the countryside around is made of hills, plains, vineyards and Alps moutains not far. The climate is lot better than in Paris and obviuosly than in Lille. The limit of mediterranean climate is about 80 from Lyon, and the sea is one hour in TGV (marseille).

It is a nice city definitely, however, do we agree it punches well below its own weight for recognition for a city the size of Vancouver, Zurich and Lisbon?

Lol...You will find the real Mediterranean climate far more than 80, not before Orange, about 180 km, 2 hours by the express way.

Because Paris steals all the limelight, as you mentioned before. It's the same reason Manchester and Birmingham punch below their weight despite being much larger than Zurich and comparable to Vancouver in metro population - because London steals all the limelight, and everywhere else falls under the radar. That's what happens when you have one city that dominates virtually everything, whereas in Canada, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are all important and one is not truly dominant (even if Toronto is slightly ahead).

Or, you could look at it another way - cities like Zurich and Geneva are more important than their size would suggest. Geneva, with 194,458 people, is not a large or even a medium-sized city, but is still one of the world's most important financial centres and is stupidly expensive for such a small, boring city (London prices, but with nowhere near as much to see or do).

Yes.
I much prefer the Canada/Germany/Spain/Italy style where two or three cities compete for the spotlight

Toronto actually has almost as many people as Montreal and Vancouver combined. But it's true that the two smaller cities are very close to Toronto in global renown, and depending on what part of the world you are in, most people around you in certain places might actually think that Montreal or Vancouver are the biggest city in Canada.
