Can I get a job in Switzerland? I am licensed as a RN in the States. I would love to live there, but I am not sure how to go about it legally. I have no problems w/ French language and I can take another license exam. My issue is that I might have to be there without a work permit. Is it possible to work there as a nurse?

Here is some starter information for living/working in Switzerland for third country nationals:

Residence

Anyone who works during his/her stay in Switzerland or who remains in Switzerland for longer than three months requires a permit. Residence permits are issued by the Cantonal Migration Offices. A distinction is made between short-term residence permits (less than 1 year), annual residence permits (limited) and permanent residence permits (unlimited).

Labour / Work permits

Switzerland has a dual system for the admission of foreign workers. Gainfully employed nationals from EU/EFTA States can benefit from agreements on the free movement of persons. Only a limited number of management level employees, specialists and other qualified employees are admitted from all other countries.

Priority
(Art. 21 AuG)
Third state nationals may only be admitted if a person can not be recruited from the labour market of Switzerland or another EU/EFTA member state. Swiss citizens, foreign nationals with a longterm residence permit or a residence permit allowing employment, as well as all citizens from those countries with which Switzerland has concluded the Free Movement of Persons Agreement (at present, the EU and EFTA states) are given priority. Employers must prove that they have not been able to recruit a suitable employee from this priority category, despite intensive efforts.

*EU/EFTA=European Union/European Free Trade Agreement
*Americans are 'third state nationals'

Having lived and worked professionally in Switzerland (at the invitation of the Swiss Government !!),
I wonder why so many would like to live and work there ?

It is expensive, compared to almost anywhere else.
It is NOT *all* mountains. Most of it is flat.
Where there ARE mountains, except for a few places,
the permanent inhabitants are rather *low income*,
(compared to *city folks*) and work their butts off.

I would be the last one to tell anyone, NOT to try to improve.
Maybe in today's world, not that many places where you could go and improve ?
