Some of you may have read how I am constantly getting on the 15 year olds case about drinking so many Capri Suns, Big Gulps, and playing video games and Facebooking all day, saying how he's going to be fat and unhealthy. His standard response is always "Look at these ripped abs" as he lifts up his shirt and points to his abs.

Well, the other day he received the results from the California Physical Fitness Test he took in school and was a bit braggish about his results:

Mile Run - 7:20 seconds (CA recommended Healthy Fitness Zone - 7:30 to 10:00)

Trunk lift (inches) - 12 (CA recommended Healthy Fitness Zone - 9-12)

Situps in one minute - 70 (CA recommended Healthy Fitness Zone - 21-40)

Pushups in one minute - 30 (CA Recommended Healthy Fitness Zone - 12-25)

BMI - 18.9 (CA Recommended Healthy Fitness Zone - 15.1 - 23)

He says "see, I can still drink my sodas, eat my cookies and have the occasional McDonalds and still be in shape". I tell him that at only 15 years old, he still needs to do a LOT more exercise than just the one hour at P.E. and 40 minutes of basketball at lunch.

I think the test could be used to test adult fitness levels as well.

I agree with Lao and disagree with his son. The trouble is that, up to a point, many teenagers can get away with being a bit careless about fitness and good nutrition, but when they get a little older they'll see the effects of poor nutrition and too little exercise. For most people it's likely to be easier to follow good habits in adulthood if they have already established these at a young age.

So true. I blame his mom a lot for buying that crap and keeping in the house. Sure we eat good healthy dinners, but I just hate having soda in the house and watching him drink it. Drives me crazy.
