Walk/run or bicycle to the gym and everywhere else.
I guess I'm just appalled at the amount of cars parked in the lot when rolling through on my 9-speed.
It's one thing to be coming from 10-20+miles away, but I doubt most of the patrons live more than 2-3 miles away.
Always an empty bike-rack

If you'd like to walk the 1.5 miles from my home to the gym, on a busy narrow two-lane state highway with no berm, in the dark, have at it. Don't whine when you get hit by a car.

google "average commute distance"
The average commute (to work) is about 16 mi. For a breakdown check the Bureau of Transportation Statistics:
BTS | Figure 2 - On a typical day, how many miles one-way do you travel from home to work?
For most people probably the trip to or from work is when they go to the gym so it makes sense most will be in their auto.
Another part of the equation is some people actually prefer to exercise inside instead of outside. As hard as it is to believe.

Really? That is appalling to you? Maybe those cars are parents with their kids who are shopping for groceries. Maybe they have several places they need to go and that is only stop one of their "to-do-list".
I am all for exercise, but I dont find this to be appalling like you do. You must be in super excellent shape with very low body fat % if this appalls you.
Maybe those people are like me who get up at 5:30 every day to go running for a few miles and later in the evening they do their weight workout. And, maybe they have their children in tow so you never just know. Now if you said that you were appalled that they were all fat then I would understand and probably support you more. But unfortunately, I am not with you on this one.

Do you know everyone's schedule? I drive about 3 miles to the gym at 5:45 a.m. and leave about 6:45. I still have to eat, shower, get dressed, get my daughter out the door to school and get to work on time. What's appalling about that?

Don't get your lycra all bunched up, they are probably on the way home from work.

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe those people don't have bikes or heaven forbid, might not even like riding bikes?
And I personally don't see the point of running/walking to the gym unless I'm only going to do weights there. I can run/walk in my neighborhood.

I suppose if the gym is at a place where there aren't many sidewalks etc there'll be a lot of members taking their cars there. On another note gas is so cheap in the US(compared to here at least) it's no wonder people take their cars everywhere.
I heard that Atlanta for example is hopeless when it comes to sidewalks...
Where I live it's the opposite... the city was founded more than a millennium ago(even if people have lived here since before Christ), and developed into a smaller town in the 12th century, and haven't changed much since the middle 15th century(other than the fallen city-walls), meaning most of the streets and some of the more robust buildings from that era is still left. This also means that the streets which are often very narrow are made for walking rather than any kind of wheel-based transportation. The result is that I'll beat the buses squirming routes by walking better ways. the result is that just about everyone uses their bikes or walks, simply because going through the city with a car is just clumsy and not very time-efficient.

Only nuts'n'fruit-loops wear lycra, I wear regular clothes while riding.
As far as everyone driving, I'm not going to stop them either.
They got kids or something, then that's their business, but the fact of the matter is that I'm usually only one out there while everyone else is buckled in.
Figured I'd start a thread for bike-commuting in the appropriate sub-forum, but the car-superiority trumps all, until a bigger vehicle comes along.
