That is wonderful! We have some people in their 70's and 80's at my gym who do quite a lot too. I think exercise adds a lot to quality of life.

Type "advantages and disadvantages of free weights" into Google and you will have plenty to read about your topic, which really isn't the topic of this thread.

I am very happy with my progress on the machines and with my workout as it is, and have absolutely no reason or desire to change it in any way. I grow stronger, more flexible, and more fit every day.
I agree with lots in your post. I have been lifting free weights for a long time, the risk of injury is overblown, plus you should really learn how to do the exercise properly no matter what you are using.

I stand by my first post, free weights develop a skillset that you will never get from a push-pull machine. The difference between free squatting 300 lbs and pushing the same weight on a machine is massive.

How would it affect someone with arthritis in a shoulder?

Thanks. Since you do not have the slightest clue about my level of knowledge and experience, my abilities and limitations, or much else about me, that is probably very advisable.

Oh, by the way, have you contributed to this thread by discussing your age, gender, and details of workout on it? No? Oh, I see....

Why don't you tell us about your level of knowledge and experience, your abilities, etc.? I don't know how we could know about them unless you tell us, and then we'll have a basis to judge whether the arrogance in the above post is justified or not.

Because frankly, judging me is not the topic of this thread.

Instead of attacking me for posting what I thought was a pleasant post about my workouts, I'd like for tickyul to be as open as the rest of us have been, and put his age, gender, and workout in an ON TOPIC post on this thread, for people to read and enjoy. He could do this instead of criticizing others that he does not know, while being secretive about his own age, gender, and workouts. Unlike him, I wouln't be rude enough or enough of a troll to condemn/criticize his chosen workout unless he asked me to, though. Perhaps we would all be inspired by it. Who knows - - maybe he's 80 and spends a lot of hours at the gym doing free weights and who knows what else, each week.

I have received a number of rep points for my posts above, some specifically thanking me for standing up to the "free weight bullies". I have and had no intention of standing up to anybody. I didn't realize that the fact that someone is older, female, and works out in a conventional way would trigger such reactions. I just wanted to share the fact that I do exercise at my age, and get a lot out of it.

Well, I have both arthritis and a herditary form of periphiral neuropathy........working out makes my body feel a lot better....a lot less pain. I believe one of the secrets to avoiding injury when working out is getting your body nice and very warm BEFORE you work out.

I was not trying to be confrontational, just expressing my opinion.

If you try something different, you may learn something......and it may be a lot of fun. When using free weights you build up you workout as your confidence grows, not really that hard.

I am familiar with free weights, have used them, and have nothing against them. I am not the type to put down any form of exercise just because I do something else. Every form of exercise has advantages and disadvantages, or else we would all be doing the same things. I agree that free weights are lots of fun. I gradually moved to using the machines about 3 years ago, though, and I am happy with them.

How old are you?

I did not criticize anybody. I simply stated my OPINION that working out with free weights is superior to machines. If you could pull any criticism out of my posts it would be of the type of exercise, not a person.
