I am a sis too, have a treadmill and a bowflex. Bought both used, very reasonable. Too darn hot here to be running around in the summer, when it hits 95 everyday, I become an outdoor wimpo....and darn proud of it!

I vote for a rowing machine. It's a whole body cardio machine and provides some toning when done properly. I use to use one that was also a rowing video game.

I would choose a Spin Bike. It doesn't require a lot of space and it won't use any electricity. I love working out at the gym on treadmills but a good treadmill will cost around $5,000. I don't really like the elliptical either, because it's hard to get my heart rate up and also a good one is very expensive.

I already have a stationary bike that I don't use because it hurts my butt and it makes my hip flexors sore.

It would definitely be a power rack. I would never make my one home machine a cardio machine because cardio can basically be done anywhere at anytime without any machines to help.

A powerrack with a pullup attachment is by far the most flexible and best choice of a machine for home use and youll NEVER outgrow it. You can use barbells, dumbbells, bench press, squats, military presses, pullups, and its safe to use. Some even have a lat bar, row tower and dip attachments.

The Power Rack is king my friend. The Power Rack is KING.

I HIGHLY recommend Powertec:

If you dont want your "one machine" to be a weight/strength machine, then the Rower is the best choice. Concept II is what you should get. Just as SailorDave said above, its a WHOLE BODY machine that is better than a treadmill or elliptical.

FYI, a health club quality Concept II rower will run you about $1000. Rower gets my vote, as well. Plus it doesn't use any electricity, either.

Treadmill. It's much better for my damaged knee than running on a hard surface, and I can multitask while I do it. I usually read and plan lessons while I run.

I hear ya. I have to go to the local Rec ctr to run on their indoor track right now. 105-108 is just so dang hot (although I still see people running outside even in the AFTERNOON). I have more space (12x18) in my home workout room. I have a simple bench, free weights and dumbbells, resistance bands, a Wavemaster XXL bag (I do Taekwondo too), a TV, DVDs, and thick puzzle mat flooring. In addition, I run (at the Rec ctr right now) and have a jumprope.

I vote treadmill. I have an Elliptical, and I do get a great workout with the different variations in workout programs and through an interval training program I came up with, but you can't beat the old standby of the treadmill. If you can run, that's the best cardio there is. And it beats running in the heat. Good luck on your choice!
