You will find that most runners are extremely judgmental of walkers.
I've been a serious runner all my life and have never felt this way myself. I have nothing against walkers at all except when they are walking in a marathon and taking up all the room for the runners. Then the runners are forced to run around them, thus expending precious energy. I personally think walkers should have a much later starting time than runners in a marathon. That's the only time I have some resentment towards walkers, but for reasons I feel that are justified.
But walkers just out walking on the road? I've never known or heard of any runners disrespecting a walker under those circumstances. Why would they?
Get a backpack and put 20-30-40 lbs in it. Then go out and get some great exercise............walk as hard as you can.................brief moderate walking....................walk as hard as you can.....................brief moderate walking........repeat for 20-30 minutes (Or less, you may feel like you are going to die.).
This is much better than boring jogging and more challenging to both your muscles and cardiovascular system. You can also throw in duck walks, goose step, low walking, walking on your tiptoes.

I did that in the Army for 6 years...LOL!
When I was stationed in Ft. Bragg, we had a mandatory 12 mile road march (1 time a year) with a 25 lb. rucksack, helmet on, web gear, weapon (with magazine in it), and combat boots. Very heavy and hot! I did it in 2 hours!! Jogged some of it too.
Yes, it's a great workout, what you mentioned. Been there, Done that!!!
I prefer to walk at a fast pace instead of run, though I used to run in my 20s, 30s and early 40s. After a certain age, in my case around 50, some of us accept our body's limitations as well as celebrate our strengths. I speed walk to maintain aerobic fitness and don't run to protect my joints from potential running injury.
In Jr and Sr high I used to be on cross country and track so I would run all the time. Now I walk at 3mph at 10% incline for 20 mins. Plus my other cardio machines so I'm all good with it
I'd rather walk because, to be honest, running/jogging bores me. I do it because it's part of my workout (and certainly more effective), but walking is much more enjoyable to me.
I prefer walking fast for low impact cardio. I have a problem with one of my knees, so the high impact of running is too much for me.
