All the fitness instructors at the gym talk about the fat-burning zone. I understand anerobic vs. aerobic. I understand burning sugar versus burning fat.

But---even if anerobic activity is burning sugar---if it's more intense and hence burns more calories, won't the calories burned lead to weight loss that would include fat loss?

I'm just not getting this. Please enlighten me!

Jazzcat, Here is my favorite article on the subject:
The Myth of the Fat-burning Zone | Active.com

That explains it better than I ever could

Thanks so much, Karen! So it IS a myth.....It's just that a greater percentage of the calories are fat, but it's still calories in, calories out....

I also like the "Good Calories, Bad Calories" book by Gary Taubes for more information re: the eating aspect.

I go by this simple rule.

Sweat. Mad sweat. Drenching sweat.

It means you're getting rid of fat.

Well not so much a "myth" as an antiquated method. It holds true points but other mechanisms make the methods equal out to the point where the most effective method is actually hard intervals, for both stamina and fatburn.
