my only disagreement with the subject is that is that i think its a point that doesnt need to be made. i dont think there are many people suggesting it has to be in a gym.
Gymn is great, lots of great people, trainers, all the equipment you need,no snow, rain, cold or excessive heat and as its getting dark these days at 4;30pm till 7;30am the gymn has lights.lots of people to talk over workout and diet routines.
Gymn may not be for every one but it sure works for me.
Why are people brainwashed into thinking a body cant be worked out anywhere but a gym?
People are not "brainwashed" in to thinking this. Its just that most people who are not as gun-ho about fitness/exercise/working out as some of us, NEED to have that special place where there are no distractions and 100% of their time and focus is on working out. Kinda like you dont really need to go to church but its better if you did. Get it?
Plus, the many different types of machines and equipment at the gym will allow for more effective workout for those who do not want to, or are unable to run or do pullups from a tree, etc. Plus, the camraderie and friendships that you find at the gym are also motivating factors as well.
THAT is why most people prefer gyms and why there are sooooo many gyms popping up all over the place.
There are excellent reasons for people to use a gym. It's really just a matter of personal preference and circumstance. If I lived somewhere else and didn't work from home a gym could be a more attractive option. I fence at an academy and don't do that outside. Although it would be fun to observe peoples' reactions.
It doesn't HAVE to be a gym----but for those of us willing to pay the money and who get something from it, the gym can be more motivating and introduce us to more things. Without the gym, I would just be walking and doing the stationery bike at home. That routine gave me a certain level of fitness (mostly some cardio) but was doing nothing for strength and flexibility. Thanks to the gym, I am more toned than I was ever was---and that's saying something at 58! Without the gym, I would never be doing water aerobics, Zumba, yoga, pilates, step, kickboxing, and weights.
I believe the most important thing to remember is to exercise no matter where. Staying in shape for our health and not become a couch potatoe. So the answer is we are all right.
Thanks for all of the replies. I just was wondering why all I ever seem to get is the "I dont work out anywhere but a gym" attitude from people. I dont know how many times ive met ppl saying they need to start exercising and when I tell them I live out in the country wheres there are tons of open roads with barely any traffic they say "Oh I dont work out anywhere but the gym". I dont get it. Do they think that because I live in the country that im going to chase them with a chainsaw while wearing a pig mask or whip out a banjo?
As for comforts of weather yeah that i can understand. I guess since i was forced to work out outdoors in all weather when i was in the army ive just grown an indifference to what it looks like outside.
Ehh just go watch Motel Hell or Deliverance. Same concept.
