Don’t forget where the idea of a rowing machine came from. How many people bought electric trolling motors and only pick up oars in an emergency? I know that most row boats don’t have the sliding seat workout of your better rowing machines. However; you are out in nature and you can actually cover great distances. I know that it gets hard when the lakes and ponds are frozen - rowing is best done on the machines at that time.
I just think that many times we have turned our backs on the actual work (exercise). Sometimes the hard physical work jobs can keep us in shape and sometimes we can actually get paid - instead of paying.
The rowers at my gym are fairly busy. Mainly used by the 50+ set. Unfortunately, they seem to be in ill repair. The foot strap on one of them is chronically broken, and has been since I joined the gyn 2 years ago.
I only use it if the good one (only 2 machines) is available. Otherwise, I need to stop every 2 minutes to adjust the foot strap, really messing up my workout.
My Concept2 rower is at the UPS center waiting for me to pick it up on Monday!
You lucky duck!!!

Well, rowing/crew is a bit different than using an oar and paddling. My husband used to tease me about that (he's into fishing, canoeing and kayaking), but he (as did his bro who owns a ConceptII) had no idea our shells had seats on tracks. And FWIW, we used to row through ice laden rivers. We used to have to smash the ice up with our oars. And the wusses wore pogies.

Yep, thanks to an unexpected Christmas bonus, we now have a rower at home. Which is awesome, since I'm trying to limit my running after having broken some cartilage in my knee a year ago.
You are going to have a blast with it hooligan!!! Can't wait to buy one someday myself, saving for it now. I'm totally hooked! I also love their website and community, it is really cool
When I was young we had just a little three acre lake. I used to love to just go out and lap the lake in the jon boat. I broke many sets of oars - when oars were very cheap. Often I would row on our larger lakes and streams. I have never had any back problems and always had good upper body strength.
I actually have a rowing machine - but I don’t use it. I have never caught a fish while trolling from the rowing machine!
I just think that we have become too lazy as a society. How many people park in the fire lanes and handicapped spaces - that are not physically disabled? Except if there are security issues; I try to park as far away from entrances as I can. Buying the electric trolling motors converts the physical rowing into just another sit-down job. I think that the easy way is killing us.

Oh, yeah, we use them a fair amount at the CrossFit gyms I go to.
I think I'll christen it this weekend with a 5K row for time. Shooting for sub-19:30...

I totally agree and it bothers the heck out of me, but my rant would be better suited for another thread.

My brother in law is a crossfit junky. He's always texting me with his distance/times...he has yet to puke, which means he's not pushing himself hard enough.
I don't mine parking far away if there isn't a spot in the car park, but.... to intentionally park far away -- well, good on you, not for me though.
