Due to a badly sprained ankle I've been seeing a physical therapist for the past couple of weeks and each time I go, they comment on how tight my calf and lower leg muscles are. This is not a compliment. I realise it's possible it's because of my changing how I walk, where I'm putting my weight and even what shoes I've been wearing since the sprain, but does anyone have exercise ideas for loosening things up? I will be joining the Y after tax season is over if that helps.

Have you asked the physical therapist? They have books filled with exercises and their variations. The only one I know is this one:

Slide show: A guide to 10 basic stretches - MayoClinic.com

But if you google calf stretches you'll find these as well:

I just got 'The Stick' a stick that has rollers on it that massages. I got it for tight calf muscles and it works great.

Foam roll your calf muscles. Get a deep massage or two. Make sure you stretch. Because you sprained your muscle, some of your mobility was lost due to muscle inactivity. You need to activiate those muscles again, stretch them, foam roll, etc. Get rid of muscle imbalances.

Um, yes I definitely did. They just suggested keep on with the stretching exercises I've been doing so far which are getting a bit dull. I'll research some others.

I was going to suggest The Stick too. Also, try wearing some calf compression sleeves. They increase bloodflow to the area, helps heal the old injury, and helps prevent further injury.

Second post: Get a new massage therapist. Massage Envy is the worst.
