Depends on how hard you workout. Lately I have been using alot of extra calories, between cardio and this crazy powerlifting routine so 1 snack is cool but I dont usually take it in a bar.
Most protein bars are not to be recommended for people who need to lose weight and/or in the process of developing better nutrition/dietary habits because they are usually loaded with sugar.
They ARE however good for someone like me who primarily wants to GAIN weight though.
I would normally deter anyone (usually women) new to working out who are not like Crossfit fire-breather types. But for me, I like and prefer Clif cookies and cream and Tigers Milk bars.
Very few if any protein bars are really healthy. If you want to bring a nice healthy snack, get some all natural peanut butter on whole wheat bread. Perhaps a serving of nuts or a Organic low/non fat yogurt.
A snack high in fiber also helps control hunger if that is what you seek so eat loads of veggies for a snack.
My combo of Celery and Carrots for a mid day snack does wonders.
I've tried ThinkThin bars, which have 20 grams of protein and zero sugar with 220-240 calories (depending on the flavor).
They do have 11 grams of "sugar alcohol" in them. Not sure if that is just a sneaky way of saying there is no sugar, with there really being sugar in the bar -- or whether "sugar alcohol" is actually not as bad for the body as regular sugar.
Also, they taste pretty good. Not really chocky or dry, but moist and tasty.
I don't eat that many, but I have a few at my desk at work if I have missed breakfast, or had to work through lunch. It usually curbs the hunger for several hours.

I definatly agree, the protein-bar idea is good, but it usually ends up being sugary candy with slightly more protein than there usually is in other candy.
which is fine for recovering muscles, but not really a weightloss supplement.
Then there is the cravings issue... even for me who can control my cravings without problems 99% of the time have trouble staying away when there is 30 bars in my shelves... my over-eaten of them is why I had to go back to protein shakes, chicken and eggs... I don't like to admit it, but in the instance of protein bars even i get hit by the "just one more, the workout session was kinda rough..."(and yes that's me being an idiot)
Want something better than protein bars? Bring a baggie of almonds to work. They are a great source of protein and keep hunger at bay for awhile. I also suggest bringing an apple as well. It has high water content (i believe) and will keep you satisfied. Protein bars can be misleading.
