I am just wondering about this.

I notice some people have to go out of their way to "walk as exercise" intentionally while other people get around walking more often as practicality and don't feel the need to spend time "walking as exercise" because it's already what they do a lot of. Now, in the United States, it seems in general a lot of cities differ in how many people walk (for example in big dense ones like NYC, obviously more people walk to stores and get around as pedestrians etc.) and get things done via walking, so I wonder how the amount of walking "for fitness" vs. "walking to get by" differs for most people.

My neighborhood is not pedestrian friendly (grrrr!!) so walking for exercise would be my option.

My town is very unfriendly for cars, so consequently everyone walks or takes the bike. I think it's a nice atmosphere with everyone walking all over the streets. The town is very medieval, and streets are typically laiden with stones rather than paved.
Then again it was a village already during the 10th century...

I thnk it's a good thing, hardly any pollution at all, and it's healthy o bike/walk.

Neither. I walk around a lot because my house is big and my job requires lots of walking around.

My job requires a lot of walking around. But on the weekends I like to go for short hikes as well.

Personally, I think walking without a goal in mind is boring. I walk to get places and to run errands, but I've never been able to just "go for a walk" randomly.

The only times I go for a walk are with my dog to either get her some exercise or to clear my head. Walking, to me, is in inefficient way to exercise (unless you have physical issues which restrict you to only walking, of course).

I walk mainly for the sake of just getting around. If I want/need exercise I run. When I walk, I try to make it as exercise like as possible by parking as far away in the parking lot as possible, taking stairs always instead of elevators, take the long way, etc. At the office, we have a 6 level parking structure and I always park on lvl 6 and take the stairs down, and take the stairs up. Since I go out for lunch everyday, I do this twice per day.

I have to add that I tend to drive to places that are walking distance from my home like - Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, supermarket, mall, etc. With the local gas prices at $5.00 per gallon (and rising), maybe I will start walking more.

I don't walk if I don't have to.

In nature, primates don't walk for the sake of walking. They walk to get food and water and that is about it. Typically, they chose an environment that minimizes as much as possible the need to walk.

I have an acquaintance who is five years younger than I am and walks about 5 miles a day. She has already had both knees replaced and is talking about getting one of them done again.

I walk around my neighborhood for about 30-45 minutes a day, anywhere from 2 to 3 miles, sometimes more. I've got several routes stored in my head with approximate distances and times. I enjoy it; I like seeing my neighbors, looking at how they've landscaped their houses, looking at flowers and trees, etc.

There is a small zoo in my neighborhood; on weekends I'll walk over there, walk through the zoo, and head home.

On weekends, if I'm headed to the local thrift store or produce market, I walk. There are a lot of places nearby for me to walk to, just not many nearby that I'm interested in actually going to.
