Most people are obese because they lack of willpower, eat unhealthy and barely move, but in some cases obesity is a result of genetics, illness ( like thyroid, diabetes, depression ), metabolic or hormonal dysfunction etc. and sometimes is related to poverty - less education to make right food choices, and less money to buy healthy food, lack of insurance to seek medical help, food options in poor neighborhoods are severely limited, low-income workers may also have less time to cook their own meals, less money to join sports clubs, and less opportunity to exercise outdoors.

I think it is both hereditary and environmental. Let's face it. Some people are born and will mature into big frames that can fill out. Then, if you add certain medical conditions (diabetes is real and hypothyroidism is real, but "my thyroid is off" is often an excuse...i.e. put down the fork), depression and comfort eating, and personal lifestyle choices, obesity is rarely a disease. Some people quit alcohol and smoking cold turkey, so that's not a disease, just an addiction.

oats cost 73 cents a pound at costco, try to get fat eating only oats (without adding sugar, fruit and milk).

its really not that difficult. i could do it easily and happily. but when i eat it for dinner my wife gives me a hard time.

but really, people who are struggling with weight have no business crybabying about wating oats only every day. you do what it takes.

There is medication for thyroid so I do not think that should be used as an excuse at all. I think obesity is a combination of things and everyone is different. Certainly a large proportion of people who are obese are that way because they have no will power. Words like genetics, hormones, diabetic pop up a lot, and while sometimes these things make it very difficult to lose weight, none of them make it impossible.
Some people are brought up in families who are obese and they never learn to eat right. When they attempt to lose weight they have people rallying around them trying to sabotage their efforts.
There is no easy explanation and no easy answer for obesity. Losing weight is very hard to do. Those that want to be a normal weight will make the commitment to get there while others who do not think it is all that important will make excuses.

Yeah, but obesity isn't the disease, it is laziness.
