I walk 3-5 miles a day on weekdays, and 5-8 on weekends. I've participated in at least one half-marathon for the past 7 years. All I do is walk. Walk walk walk walk. And it's helped me maintain a 150 pound weight loss for the past 10 years.
I dare you to call me lazy.
Not to mention walking is easier on the hips, knees and ankles than jogging or running.
im going with the odds. people who want to do the least possible dont usually have the drive to even do that.

Anyway...thanks for the replies! If you are walking or running and you're into nerd stuff, Zombies, Run is quite a bit of fun. I'm finding myself looking forward to doing my daily walk so I can continue the story.
I do find myself having more energy through the day. Aside from anything else, I think just getting some fresh air/sunlight/mental downtime is a definite health benefit!

Walking is almost like meditating for me; I concentrate on my steps and forget about everything else. When I'm not doing that, I'm mentally sorting out my day, planning for the next day, etc.

And I get to see what my neighbors are up to.
I happened to need something from a shop in my old hometown, so I did my walk there today. It was quite interesting to see the street where I grew up and what they'd done with the house (it looks fantastic!). Then I spotted something in the backyard and realized they still had up the giant hand-made birdhouse my dad made when I was a kid. I had to take a picture.
I'm also lucky that my own neighorhood is walker-friendly with lots of sidewalks and nature trails.

haha i like you choose an extreme like running marathons. im certainly not suggesting you go from completely sedentary to running marathons. how about something in the middle of doing next to nothing and doing the extreme amount?
im not sure what makes you not lazy. all i know is you were at least 150 pounds overweight, sounds lazy to me. now "maintaining" that weight loss is supposed to be such a great accomplishment? losing 150 pounds is easy when you are very obese, maintaining a particular weight is easy unless it is extremely low bodyfat.

Expect that greater than 80% of people who lose weight gain it back...so maintaining the new weight IS a BIG accomplishment- one 80% of people fail to do.

The way I see it, I'm doing more today than I did yesterday (today I walked 45 minutes vs 35). I'm doing more this week than I did last week (when I wasn't walking at all). Next week I'll be doing still more. Once I've been walking for a few weeks, I plan to move up to jogging. This time next year I might indeed run a marathon. And that process happened because I found an activity that I enjoyed and I saw I could fit it into my schedule.

Really? Wow, that is a completely misinformed response. There isn't an official stat yet, but somewhere between 80-95% of people who lose more than 10% of their body weight regain it plus more. 95% Regain Lost Weight. Or Do They? - NYTimes.com
People have a very difficult time keeping it off, and sticking with it means some significant lifestyle changes. To trivialize the commitment it takes to maintain a big loss is misguided.

Then log off and find some fat person at work to have a bet with that they won't lose any weight on their exercise program.
I mean, come on, you're talking with real people here, what good is "going with the odds?" I'm not here to be a shoulder for people to cry on, but all good advice involves a modicum of empathy and faith that the person will take it and run with it. Otherwise, what's the point of giving it?
