People can be obese yet physically healthy and fit and at no greater risk of heart disease or cancer than normal weight people, say researchers.

The key is being "metabolically fit", meaning no high blood pressure, cholesterol or raised blood sugar, and exercising, according to experts.

Looking at data from over 43,000 US people they found that being overweight per se did not pose a big health risk.

Don't you just love these articles that contradict each other. Have another.

Why Obesity is a Health Problem for Families and Children

From the article in the OP:

"This research highlights once again the important role of physical fitness as a health marker."

"In the majority of cases, obesity is an undeniable risk factor for developing coronary heart disease."

Being a fit fat person doesn't negate gravity. Take care of those aching joints.

My dad is no obese, but he definitely carries a lot of extra weight. He is the strongest fittest guy I know (for his age). He carries boulders up and down the hills of Tennessee. He's 5'10" and huge. I believe it. Unfortunately though, this is ammo for fat unfit people to use to make themselves feel better. He is in fit shape, most overweight people are not.

My dad also has no high blood pressure or any other problems, including achy joints.

"meaning no high blood pressure, cholesterol or raised blood sugar, and exercising"

Doing all the things that are either way easier to be if not overweight or on the way to not overweight.

With no apparent control group, or statisticially significant sample size. What percentage of obese people are "metabolically healthy"... Another crap study resulting in more crap data.

Providing excuses not to exercise, and helping fat people feel good about themselves, are big industries.

Not sure why you offer your dad as an example if he's not obese and his weight is more muscle than fat. Not exactly representative of the typical American.

Sorry, my post was confusing. He does carry a gut, he is overweight, not obese though. He also carries a lot of muscle though. Your right, he is not representative of the typical American. I forgot to mention he was obese at one time, but still metabolically fit (in regards to this article). I believe it CAN happen for some, but most certainly not the 50% of the obese Americans this articles seems to suggest. My bad for missing that part, long day at work.
