And sitting out is not an option

We have a company co-ed softball team. I am basically the oldest one on the team. I had not played softball for probably 15 years.
We had our first game, they moved me to catcher to chase down the foul balls
The game was Tuesday, yesterday my legs were sore, I attributed it to being old and out of shape. But today I could barely walk down the stairs, I have a notable bruise on the left distal quad just proximal to the knee with pain radiating into the knee when climbing stairs. The consensus with the fellow med people is probable grade 2 muscle tear.

Now we play next Tues, we only have 5 men on the team and although I am the oldest and less skilled, I have to be there.

I am icing up today, off and on, skipped the gym (I have been going 3 to 4 times a week for strength training)
Also taking Rx flexeril and OTC Ibuprofen for pain (which, I hate to admit, is just pretty darn bad when I try to walk). I hate to sound like I am complaining but the pain is much worse today than it was yesterday, and having never had an injury like this before (or at least so long ago I do not remember it) I am amazed how painful my left knee is.

SO I have until Tuesday night to be ready to play again, skipping the game is not an option, although I can ask to play Rt field instead, maybe not have as much up and down squatting behind the plate.

Any suggestions would be appreciated THANKS!

"sitting out is not an option" "have to be there" Why? Will you lose money? Will the world end? It's just a sport.

Of course that's just my opinion. Is there the possibility of permanent damage? Would it be worth that?

That said wait a few more days. Older muscles can take longer to heal. I know. I've played golf when I was sore. Deliberately worked around my problem and got a lousy score. OTOH nobody pays me to play golf so who cares about my score?

But you might see about the right field position now. Let them know sooner rather than later. Just my 2 cents.

If it really is a grade 2 muscle strain, required rest is 3 to 6 weeks.

The only you can do is ice, compression and elevation. You can take advil or ibuprofen for your game if you are really dead set on playing.

How to Treat a Muscle Pull or Strain
I have an Rx for flexeril, but I have not called the Doc that prescribed that last year for something else and told her about all this yet. She is a D.O and a fitness/exercise specialist
You are correct, I could be looking at a few weeks to heel.

Just found out too that they called a practice for Sunday
May not make that one

Neurokinetic Therapy™ Check online for a therapist near you (only level 2 therapists are listed, but there might be a level 1 in your area, and they are nearly as good). Since I started working with my level 1 therapist (now L2)/trainer 2 months ago, I've made huge gains in my weight lifting and have been healed of both chronic & acute injuries.

I'm not a doctor nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I'd say sit the game out. I'm a runner and deal with the occasional calf strain, and even a mild strain with no bruising or swelling takes about 2 weeks to heal completely, so I'd say the above estimate of 3-6 weeks of rest is accurate for your injury.

Why do you NEED to play? Are they gonna fire you if you don't play softball? Is it really worth risking a more severe injury that might require surgery or something?
