I believe "fitness" is about the level of muscle and endurance (heart and lung capacity) your body has.
A person may be "fit" enough to play a round of golf, but not fit enough to play 3 sets of tennis.
You may have a high level of fitness where you can run a 26 mile marathon, or just an average level of fitness where you can carry groceries in from your car.
I also don't tie illness to fitness, because a person who is sick can still perform activities.
To me, there is health, and there is fitness.
Health is about having all body organs functioning correctly, and lack of disease.
Fitness is about strength and endurance.
One person can be completely healthy, but not have enough strength to lift a 40lb water bottle.
And another person can be sick, and easily lift the bottle.

I can see your point however I believe fitness and health are intimately linked. I believe mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well being are interlinked and a disturbance in one area has ripple effects throughout the other areas.
I think the traditional definition has to do with strength/endurance/flexibility/balance. What it means to me is being able to do whatever I want to do without worrying about "Can I do it?" Also being able to do so without injury. The reality is I am only fit if I adjust what I want to do to match my capabilities.
I think in the true sense of the word, "fit" means to be capable of performing an activity or a task, such as a certain type of sport, or a certain type of employment. For example, he/she is not "fit" to work as a police officer.
It can also mean possessing the desired attributes to belong to a group of people, such as to "fit in".
You may be "physically fit" for a task, but not "mentally fit", so your body may possess the strength and stamina required, but you don't have the necessary thinking ability to achieve the task.
With regard to this forum, fitness means to achieve a higher level of strength and endurance through proper diet and exercise.
Fitness to me is also about reaching my full potential. It's more than just exercising, it's a way of life to have the willpower and control over what you do every day. This requires our body and mind to be trained and fit for the task. And even if we don't have the skills, at least we have the body strength and mental toughness to overcome the obstacles.

Fit is being strong, agile, flexible, fast, having a reasonable percentage of bodyfat, and having the overall weight on your body well proportioned to the size of your frame.
