i remember many years ago i was standing at the loading dock of some store
the place i was standing to the bottom of the driveway was only like 4ft off the ground
jumped down gracefully to help load a piece of furniture or something onto the truck and people were like wow, howd you do that?
i was like wtf
i guess some people knees cant handle a 4 ft jump?... i used to jump off playground instalations that were like 10-12ft off the ground and land on 2 feet when i was a kid

That is not true at all. I have never been overweight and I do not watch television, so no couch potato here. It's actually kind of offensive for you to assume that. People get injured in a myriad of ways every single day. Those of us trying to relearn to walk and struggle with mobility issues constantly could do without your lack of understanding and judgmental attitude.

I make it a point to jog softly down the stairs without holding on. Just lucky. My wife is not quite so fortunate, so when she is with me we discretely hold hands. No one can tell I am actually supporting part of her weight so she can walk down normally. (At least we don't think they can tell)
You are not alone. Several foot surgeries later I am terrified of stairs not to mention new bifocals. I just cant's see where I am heading.
I never ever walked down the stairs. I typically run down the stairs, and most certainly run up stairs. Walking takes too much time, and it is always good for you to burn some calories outside the gym. Running up the stairs 32 times doing your daily activities is a good place to start .
Some of it is definitely sedentism. I had a bad case of plantar faciitis which put me out of commision for the most art for a whole year. I eventually get better and still walked a bit, but I live in a flat city with few stair cases. Then I visited my parents and realized that I couldn't walk down the stairs properly. It was all a loss of flexibility and balance. I just returned to my mountain hikes and go it all back within a couple of months. And that was in my 20s!

I am 67 years old, 68 next week and ride a bicycle 100 + miles/week seeking out steep hills and riding with roadies in their 20s and 30s routinely. I don't think I am couch-sized. Nonetheless, I don't go down stairs well.
I sprint up these steps for exercise instead of taking the elevator. Going down is much harder though. I usually keep my hand floating over the rail in case I trip because it's a pretty nasty fall to the bottom.
Just today a couple like in their late 30s in front of me walking pretty swiftly towards the staircase. As soon as they arrived at the staircase they slow down drastically. The woman need help walking down, she looked like she couldn't balance herself but yet she looked normal when she was walking before.
I run upstairs everyday on my way to work and it's tiring but it's good exercise and I find going downstairs a total breeze. I don't even step on the entire step just the end is good enough and I'm in my 40s.
It's just really alarming to see so many people who can't go down stair cases normally. Like an epidemic.
