I have a tendency to skip down stairs and jog going up. Now I have a new born baby and I am getting the stroller up and down the stairs when there is no elevator.
I usually can't do it, I hate stairs. I won't go up if they are too steep because I practically get vertigo trying to go down. My feet are big, I've had a couple falls resulting in broken bones already, one ankle isn't flexible, etc. I've never lived in a house with stairs either, maybe that makes a difference.
There are stairs at my job, nice wide ones with railings, and I do make a point of going up and down a couple times a day just for the exercise.
I take it easy on the stairs myself. A few years ago work moved to a new location. Both buildings were 4 story with stairs. I thought to myself I would really take advantage of that. I started out running up and down the stairs every time I needed to go up or down.
Pretty soon my right knee was bothering me going up. Soon after I quit using the stairs period. I still rode my bike 50+ mi/wk. The knees weren't bothered by that nor by hiking in the small hills around here. But the stairs were a problem.
I picked up Treat Your Own Knees by Jim Johnson. Started doing the exercises. 2yrs later and I'm using the stairs again but carefully. Sometimes I still feel the pain. Currently I don't use the handrails. But that takes more concentration.
