To you body builders in here that consume a lot of animal protein.

I came across an interesting article/s that was recently published. Any thoughts?

High-protein diet 'as bad as smoking 20 cigarettes a day' - BelfastTelegraph.co.uk

"Research from the University of Southern California shows that high levels of dietary animal protein in those under 65 was associated with a fourfold increase in their risk of death from cancer compared to those on a low protein diet.
This is an increased mortality risk associated with a 20-a-day smoking habit. The study of 6,318 adults over the age of 50, found that protein-lovers were 74% more susceptible to early death from any cause than their low-protein counterparts.....

There are a lot of variables the study didn't address, such as lifestyle are protein source. I'm also sure that I would feel better after eating turkey burgers for a week versus smoking 20 cigaretets a day for a week. You mean to tell me a person who eats salmon every day is as bad off as a smoker? Really? A hardcore smoker is the same as someone who eats chicken and works out 5 days per week? Yeah, crap.

High protein diet raises IGF-1. Which is why the American Cancer society has been pushing for a plant based diet for years. Of course other variables come into play but this happens to be one of those variables. There are other things that you can do to lower your IGF-1 like calories restriction, eating more "superfood" or being an Ashkenazi Jew.

High protein diets (too high anyway) are hard on the kidneys.

This is why don't pay attention to articles like these because one article will tell you one thing and then another article will come along and contradict it. Going by these articles you could conclude that nothing is ever good for you.

i would be willing to bet that the majority of the reason is due a high caloric intake which just so happens to contain high protein as well as high carbs and fats

i really dont think the article is talking about bodybuilders so much as the guy at the golden corral eating 6 servings each of ribs, hot dogs, pork chops, and hamburgers

Basically you have someone in the UK quoting a research abstract from USC...typical. Now if they had actually linked to the study we could see if there is any validity to the abstract conclusions.
