I did my first 90 minute class of Bikram hot yoga today; it was intense.
I usually do yoga at home privately- but a friend urged me to try this.
So it's like over 2 dozen poses, with the temp in the room
at appx. 100 degrees....
It was way out of my comfort zone-
I'm shy by nature & also I didn't know what to expect.
But....I did it
The people taking the class couldn't believe I've never done it before, lol
My concern though is the after effects.
I felt a little light headed, a little nauseous & even a little dizzy about 30 minutes after I left.
Is that normal?
I brought a huge electrolyte infused water...
The teacher told me & a few others we're not allowed to drink water during it, until she says so.
That was a huge turnoff for me-
If I'm thirsty I'm hydrating.....
So I ignored her & chugged it
I'm on my second 60 day challenge in a year.
Love my sessions.
There is a reason for everything they tell you to do and not to do in class.
That includes party time after Eagle Pose
I've always got lots of energy-
I actually didn't notice a difference there...
But the water philosophy bothers me, being in the medical field. People can potentially get heat exhustion, & if they feel thirsty they shouldn't be reprimanded for staying hydrated.
I do Bikram yoga a few times a month, but not as much as I use to since I'm more into Pilates and the past couple of months have been stressful with finals and all.
I makes sure to drink about 64ish ounces of water before hand (no chugging) and then I eat a banana afterwards and drink a powerade and it works for me.
I only experience issues if I drink water immediately before. Then it shoots back up, kind of like heartburn.
It took me a while to get to understand how my body reacted. But I made sure to properly hydrate the day before cause I didn't know what to expect. I went to with a coworker and she hated it. She really doesn't like it.
^^^^ I did have a banana & Gatorade, as well...potassium & electrolytes
Well I have to say- I have never been so drenched- every inch of my body- in sweat.
I loved that.....I just don't know if I'm gonna make it a habit yet

Good for you. She was so very wrong. Never substitute someone else's judgement for your own. I did bikram for about six months. It was challenging but I grew bored with the same poses in the same order class after class. Plus the students were a bit culty. I now do hot vinyasa, which isn't as hot as bikram, but I like it much better.

That's wild. I do hot yoga several times a week and have never had a teacher forbid us from drinking. They always start the class by emphasizing how important it is to drink as you see fit.

It depends on whether or not she did Bikram or hot yoga. Bikram is really strict about it, hot yoga is much more lenient depending on the studio
