Finding ways to stay active with MS
Multiple sclerosis takes a huge toll on the body. Some days, symptoms can be downright unbearable. The exhaustion can be so overwhelming that you don’t feel like getting out of bed, the balance problems can be so bad that you’re scared to leave the house, and the muscle stiffness can be so painful that you can’t care for yourself. However, maintaining mobility is key for managing MS. Finding ways to stay as active as possible will not only improve symptoms of MS, but doing activities that you enjoy will do wonders for your emotional well-being.
Work with your healthcare team
The first step towards a more active lifestyle is is meeting with your doctor . He or she will help you understand why it’s best to stay mobile as you move through each stage of MS. When it comes to mobility, if you don’t move it, you’ll lose it. Not getting enough exercise will reduce your body’s functional abilities, which will only make MS symptoms worse.
If you’re nervous to exercise because of existing discomforts, ask your doctor about medications that can ease your symptoms and make getting around easier. Your doctor will also let you know if you should:
Avoid certain activities.
Start a formal exercise program, complete with details about the length and intensity goal for each workout.
Work with a physical therapist.
Use a walking aid.
