I have a flight of carpeted stairs in an enclosed stairwell right outside my door. I just now got through walking up and down the top half flight of six steps 200 times in 31 minutes which got my pulse up to 128 beats per minute which is within the recommended target range for my age which is 60.

I'm just curious if anyone here who has stairs available uses them for exercise.

I occasionally run the stairs at a location in Santa Monica beach. But, its kinda far (usually 30 minutes to an hour in regular traffic) so I dont do it often. Its a VERY good workout. I instead run some hills that are almost as good but much closer.

yes. exhausting.

I use the stairs at the gym which are like miniature versions of the automated escalators at the mall. Handlebar controls like a motorcycle for speed. Grueling.

Running/walking stairs are wildly popular here; we have two man made reservoirs/ each with 80-100 stairs leading to water and back. It's like a national pastime. I thought I was in pretty good shape until I tried it.

Definitely not easy and seems like a great cardio workout.

me too. Amazing how fast I break into a sweat and how few calories I burn. However, I think it is a very good butt workout, right?

We have several flights of stairs at work. I used to do them twice a day, five minutes each time. Great exercise, especially since I have a desk job. I have never got the hang of the escalator type stair machines at the gym.

I do the stairs workouts in the bleachers at the park while the kids are playing. It makes for a great workout and keeps me mentally engaged so much more than simply running for a workout (because I have to pay really close attention not to trip!). I also change it up and do them sideways, every other step, etc., to vary the workout. If I push hard enough, the stairs get me up to 100% of my max heart rate, intense!

I do not know. Do stairs post workout for the cardio stamina benefit. Deadlifts, squats and weighted walking lunges affect my glutes/quads/hamstrings.

Could be though, just I do not know.
