I make under $40K.The Ys vary the one 30 minutes away offers a discount to college students of all ages, but my Y cuts the age off at 25. Really do like the Y and $40 bucks a month isn't bad. Think a good investment. Bummed my work isn't part of the Y employer discount.
If you have a 24hr express(bare bones gym, no pool, no basketball court etc) nearby and you like it, checkout Costco. Sometimes they have a 2-3 year prepaid deal that is a huge savings.
Also maybe the 24hr express locations are not 24hrs. But this is a really good deal, I shopped all gyms in my area, and this is the best deal. Ultimately I went somewhere else but I was surprised at the savings.

A small local 24 gym that was previously an anytime fitness. Price went down since it was sold to one of the members, and he's made a number of small changes. $29 a per month.
24 Hour (Super Sport). I pay around $36.00/mo. It's perfect since I like to go late at night. I don't know if I'd feel the same way if I went during peak times but I guess that's true anywhere.
The quality varies a lot by location. The one by my house hasn't been remodeled since the 80's so it's pretty basic but the other one I go to is newer and really nice (saltwater pool, granite sinks, basketball court, etc).
Right now, most of my time is split between three different Crossfit gyms. Each one is owned by friends who give me carte blanche to workout whenever I want. I LOVE it. No other currently active gym memberships because I dont feel I need to have any. My cardio consists of 5k-10k runs and we have a really nice gym setup where I live - Hoist machine, treadmill, elliptical and full stack of dumbbells from 5lbs to 60lbs. Between this and the CF gyms, I am set.
If I were to get another gym membership it would absolutely be Equinox. Have one within walking distance of home, and it is my FAR the best non Crossfit gym that ever existed.

I go to Crunch. I pay $148.40 per year ($9.95/month + $29 annual fee) and that includes classes.
They increased their price so that new members have to pay $14.95 a month if they want their memberships to include classes. The existing members were grandfathered in, so we're still paying $9.95.
There was no enrollment fee when I joined, but I think the enrollment fee is $20 or $30. Throughout the year (usually anytime there's a holiday) they'll have a deal where they waive the enrollment fee for new members.
I have my own weights. I bought an olympic bar, curl bar, power rack, bench, and weights for about $400 total. I pity the fools that pay $50+ a month, or even $25 a month, for gyms just to lift weights and/or run on a treadmill.
I also go to the local Y. Mine is $48 a month for my wife and I to attend... a bargain.
We both work out at least 4 times a week.
