I'm doing the assisted pull ups with the goal of doing a legit pull up and it seems like a waste of time as I don't feel like I'm getting better. what can i do to get stronger so that I can do one? my upper body isn't particularly weak so I don't know..maybe I just need more patience..

There are a number of YouTube videos which give good tips on how to improve the number of pullups you can do, including if you can't do even one yet. Here are a couple of good ones.

For other YouTube videos just type in 'what if you can't do even one pullup.'

Also, if you would state if you're male or female, and how much you weigh, and how tall you are, it would provide a good overall picture.

I'll start: 17, M, 190 lbs, 6' tall, 36 yrs old

I've found that practicing to do more is getting exponentially more difficult...
Male, 27 y.o.
250 lbs
6'4

3~4 legit pullups, or like 12~ crossfit pullups

At my best I could do around 15 pullups and weighed 220~lbs at 22 y.o. (15 strict, i'd do more but the ones after that were never "strict", also did up to 5 reps with 80 lbs extra hanging between the legs)

Back when i had a pullup bar on my bedroom door frame, I'd pump out a set of 5+ every time i walked by. When i finally went to test it, i got 24 reps. Volume really is the key to high pull up count!

Ok thanks, because that's a fitness benchmark of mine - being able to do a pull up. Guys can do it with more ease, but that's not gonna stop me from trying
