I love weight training, been doing it on and off for over 32 years.

But I find doing long cardio to be better at boosting moods.

I’d be depressed if I worked out four hours a day. It’s too much. Some might say two hours a day is too much, that you should try working out more intensely in a shorter period, say 60 to 90 mins. I’ll give him two, but no more. Tell him to take my advice.

Sounds counter-intuitive but too much exercise causes depression.

This is just one reference but there are others. It happened to me about 15 yrs ago. Not to the extent mentioned in the article but I could tell something was very "non-standard." I was 45+ and recovery ability starts to wane but like most things about aging it sneaks up on you.

Four hours a day at any age is a ton of exercise.

Yeah I admit I don’t bother with cardio at all. I pay lip service to the idea that it’s probably great to do about 15 minutes of high intensity cardio per day but virtually every benefit and more of cardio is obtained through resistance training. My biggest issue with cardio is it was totally worthless either for weight loss or to keep weight off. Basically 45 minutes of cardio burned about 500 calories and made me hungrier by far so I would eat at least 400 to 600 just to make up for it.

I lift heavy and the afterburn effect means increased metabolism for 24 hours, I have still achieved resting heart rates below 55, 13-15% body fat, so at the end of the day life is too short for cardio. You get massive cardio benefits already if you’re lifting right

This sounds like compulsive behavior? Does your son work?

I was going to say the same thing. 4 hours sounds like OCD behavior and is probably worsening his depression as he must be completely worn down for the rest of the day.

He was in college. 4 hours a day was necessary to remain competitive. Now he is a coach, so he has cut back a little. 1 - 4 hours a day, depends on the day.

HE gets up at 4:30 a.m. most days. He has a three out work out in the morning. He does have another job (for now). He works out (mixed cardio and weights), works from 8 - 5:30,takes a nap and then does an evening work out. Sometimes he runs or bikes to work, so he gets a little more. On weekends now he seems to work out only for an hour or two most days, sometimes more. .
