Hello everyone,

Last week I was doing my 5x5 deadlifts from the floor, and I felt like a stab in my lower back, kept on finishing my workout since I was warmed up and I didn't thought that it was so bad. That same night after the workout I was kinda rigid...
Well since the day after until today I am so stiff and my lower back is so rigid that I can't even bend myself when sitted to tie my shoes.

Any ideas of what I may have twisted? And if so, please could you recommend me any kind of recovery treatment, exerecises to improve that pain?

Thank you so much in advance

I'm not a doctor but what helped me the other day when I hurt my sciatica was 15 minutes of ice, followed by 15 minutes with the heating pad. I did that for a little more than an hour, then put my TENS unit on for 30 minutes. I also took some Motrin for the inflammation. If I had a chiropractor I would have went to her/him but I don't have one yet.

I have MAJOR spine trouble beyond your wildest dreams. The first incident was due to some careless weightlifing (no, I am not against weightlifting.)

My non-professional, but experience based advice is wait another week, and be very careful. Do not get talked into any unusual exercise "treatment" regimen.

Chiluvr1228 has given you what I consider good and safe advice...but skip the chiropractor for sure until you have a much better idea of the extent of your problem. I went to two with good reps, and they effed up my spine even more with their over-confidence.

In another week, if no improvement see a dr. You should probably then get an x-ray and a CAT scan. A CAT can be very definitive....I think they are expensive in the U.S., but worth the extent of the results.

Hard to say based on what you're relaying. Could be a muscle strain or could be a more serious spine issue. I've thrown my back out more times than I care to admit and *most* of the time it heals on its own with rest and heat. I would give it a week's rest, using a heating pad 3-4x per day (don't use ice) and see if it's feeling any better. If not, I would go see an orthopedist and consider getting some x-rays.

I would not go near a chiropractor either. They could mess you up even worse than you already are.

Going forward, I would really work on increasing your core strengthening exercises. That won't guarantee you won't get back injuries, but it definitely helps. And really focus on your form and try and not go crazy with weight. High reps and lower weight can be just as effective as your 5x5 sets.

I herniated a disc once just twisting while I set my kettle bell down. I was out of commission for MONTHS! Please take it seriously, OP, and don't do any heavy lifting while you have this injury. If you are hurting bad, then you need to take it easy and maybe go to the doctor or someone who specializes in sports injuries. You really don't want to take chances with your back, do you?

And the moral of the story is: The Moment you feel a pain when exercising, STOP.

I've had similar issues when moving heavy objects -- feeling a pain and then being stiff for several days thereafter.

Hot showers (water on lower back) might help a bit but you just have to ride it out -- for quite a while likely, since pushing through your routine after your body told you to stop only made things worse.

You need to be careful. My first ruptured disc almost certainly came when I was lifting a lot. It happened with the barbell fully extended over my head and was like a sudden painful pop in my back. I dropped the barbell from full height. At the time the family doc took an x-ray and said nothing showed and told me I probably just pulled a muscle. It never got back to normal. X-rays usually show nothing if it’s a disc problem.

For sharp, sudden pain like that, I’d be suspicious. Unfortunately, the only way to tell for sure is see a spine specialist and probably have an MRI. I went years before I got a proper diagnosis and by then I had multiple ruptured discs, degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis. Be careful and good luck.

Get a pull up bar for your doorway and do dead hangs to unkink your back. I haven't had any problems since.

How's your insurance? I would get some X-Rays, and then find a Chiropractor. Also, there are a lot of You-Tube videos about gentle stretching for an injured back. That's key, make sure it's specifically for an injured back. At 65, it takes me 2 to 3 weeks to heal. You might heal more quickly then that.

Good Luck!

I agree, first things first, see a doctor and follow his/her recommendations and then as you feel better...perhaps some pool exercises and yoga if you're up to it. Great for building core muscles.
