Depends completely on the gym. It would be a huge majority at some gyms. I worked in a gym in the middle of Research Triangle Park in NC. Mostly scientists and engineers. We had one muscular member - he worked at a tire shop. I doubt there was more than a couple users.
I've read stories about gyms where needles could readily be seen including guys injecting in open view. It isn't, or wasn't, really taboo among the users. They call it "vitamins". Hulk Hogan was a user who told kids to "take their vitamins". Which amused insiders.
I've heard of it, but never first hand. First hand, I do know of places where it isn't taboo, or its understood that a large number of guys are on gear and jokes are made, but never openly injecting themselves...especially since you tend to inject yourself in the rear, and needles are a health problem when not properly handled.
When I say "average gym goer" that generally implies the middle 80% of Gyms out there...from Planet Fitness to LA Fitness/Lifetime to higher end places and Crossfit gyms. There may be a few other "mainstream" types that have a lot of weights available but I can't name them. True bodybuilder, strongman, and powerlifting gyms are somewhat rare, and a sample taken from them would represent a bias.
Physical attraction is how a person attracts a mate so yes it is one of the reason of why i work-out. Health benefits - strength, power, agility, speed, flexibility, etc are need for self-preservation and to protect one's partner/family.
A good, healthy balanced diet is needed for the above to materialize and become long-term effects.

I think why you start and why you continue to lift can be for different reasons. And the mix of reasons can constantly change.
For a lot of people in their late teens or early 20s, they might start lifting for purely aesthetic reasons. For people who may start lifting later in life because of injury (back pain, shoulder pain, etc.), they might start lifting for more pragmatic reasons. Your reasons for starting may differ based on your stage in life.
There could also be a mix. Working on your guns may be to attract the ladies, but barbell hip thrusts are not generally done for that reason.
My wife says it's a myth that women are attracted to guys with bulging muscles, they just desire reasonably fit, active fellows.
She suspects a lot of men go wild with the weights for the purpose of developing a greater sense of power. Is that physical or psychological? Maybe both. As others have said, there are a variety of reasons.
Yes, one of the reasons that I work out is to look better, but the main reason is to improve my strength and endurance. Winter is coming and I want to be prepared to shovel snow and lug huge bags of rock salt around. Plus muscle keeps me warm in the winter. If my primary reasons for lifting were cosmetic, I would get frustrated and quit when I didn't see results right away. The way it makes me feel when I get better sleep, have more energy, and can do more is what keeps me going when I don't see the results visually right away.

What's wrong with that? Because it actually works? I've had the best results with lifting than I've had with swimming or running. But there are other reasons to it. It makes me feel strong. Doing this with having a healthy diet gives me structure to my life. I don't like not having boundaries. It helps me detox and vent out my frustrations. No amount of cardio can do that for me.
