I just spent the last 8 months watching what I eat and have lost 35 pounds. What has worked for me.... I definitely had to add in the water. That was a tough one for me, as I'm not a big water drinker, but I can totally tell the difference if I slack on it. I also chose more vegetables than I used to. I make sure I am active. Not an exercise program or anything... Just parking further away from the door, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, ect. Tag with the kids is a great one, too!
I still indulge myself when I want something, but instead of 4 slices of pizza, I have 1. Instead of filling up my soda before I eat and making damn sure the cup is FULL of Pepsi, I fill it until the foam reaches the top and that is it. I do not get a refill anymore. Instead of 2 cheeseburgers, just one will do.
I also snack on carrots and cucumbers and such throughout the day. This way my body never starves and I'm less likely to stuff myself at meal time.
Yogurt and peanut butter toast has been my breakfast friend. I also take a multi vitamin and calcium supplement.
This has worked for me and once I put my mind to it, I averaged about a pound a week....
Good luck to you!

I've lost 15 pounds since October. What I did:
Walk 30 minutes every morning. Early at 7 a.m. before my husband goes to work so he can watch our daughter. I do one hour of Vinaysa Yoga once a week. I may move that up to twice a week.
breakfast one of these. I alternate. Oatmeal and toast, cottage cheese and toast, 2 egg whites, cheese, ham on toast. Or cereal. The toast is either Rye or Orowheat whole grain bread.
Lunch - I alternate salad with protein (chicken)and low fat dressing. Or ham and cheese with mayo, lettuce and tomato. Sometimes chicken nuggets with a side of corn. Homemade turkey burger or cheeseburger on wheat.
Dinner. Half a plate of vegetables. The other half of the plate is split between rice and meat or pasta and meat. Once a week we have beans and rice for dinner.
I don't snack so much but If I'm hungry I'll eat some pretzels or cheese stick or carrots.
I still drink a few glasses of red wine on the weekend. That's hard to give up.
The holidays I have eaten quite a few oatmeal and cranberry cookies. That will go away soon!!!
I was previously 168 pounds and I'm 5'5 1/2" Now I'm 153. I would like to get down to 150 and just be healthy.

I lost over 130 lb with nary a rice cake.
You can have white rice, just eat smaller amounts (a scant 1/4 cup of raw rice is a 150 calorie serving), and have it with a meal that includes plenty of non-starchy vegetables and lean protein.
I don't like most breakfast foods, and most cereal makes me more hungry than before I ate. So I buy frozen Foster Farms brand turkey meatballs. Pop 4 in the microwave for a minute or two and you have a fast, easy, protein-filled breakfast of 200 calories. They have to be turkey, the beef ones have almost twice as many calories.
Lunch is often homemade soup. I make several kinds of bean soups that are 100 calories or less per cup and very filling. I just finished making some lima bean soup that's delicious and 60 calories per cup. And vegetable soups can be made with less than 25 calories per cup. So it's soup and triscuits for lunch usually. The soup is great for snacks too, and so easy to take out of the freezer and pop in the microwave for a few minutes. Great for when you come home starving and dinner's not ready yet.
Dinner is lean protein like George Foreman'd chicken breasts or tuna salad and non-starchy vegetables. I love the Steamables type vegetables because they're so fast and easy to cook without dirtying an extra pot. And easy to keep on hand. Fresh veggies often turn to puree in my fridge before I get around to cooking them.
I snack on frozen prunes, canned pineapple, and crackers.
My best advice is to pay attention to how each food makes you feel. There are many foods that make me more hungry than before I started eating. For example, Wheat Thins do that, while Triscuits don't. Rice fills me up, pasta makes me hungrier. All of the weight watchers desserts make me hungrier. If you can identify those foods that make you hungrier and eliminate them, using them only occasionally for special treats, you'll be way ahead of the game.
Good luck!

Got a few questions~ 1. how many calaries are there in a pound or how much excircize to add up to a pound?
2. 8 oz of freshly squeezed orange juice and a piece of toast- no buttery spread a good enough breakfast? Oranges off tree just outside my door.
3. how many miles in 10,000 steps?
I normally walk about 2 miles a day and am starting to lift some weights~ need to lose quite a bit of weight!

deckdoc, a pound is 3500 calories. If you're trying to lose weight I'd eat a good sized breakfast, one that has some protein in it.
I started body for life 3 weeks ago and am down 5 pounds. My pants feel a little looser but my arms/chest have gotten bigger, my SO commented on them today. There is a meal plan associated with it that isn't too hard to follow. My meals are as follows: breakfast, something at 10am, lunch, something at 2:30pm, dinner then something around 8 (a chunk of cheese or something. The workout is pretty good, it's intense but only takes 30 minutes if that. I'm usually sweating when I leave the gym.

If you are not ready to be perfect...
Look at what you do eat. What could you change to make it a better choice and enjoy it?
How much do you eat? Look at what you are eating and some of your favorites calories wise and see if you can lower the fat in the food, or make it whole grain.
Liquid calories - Big sin. You can drink these without really knowing. Personally I made the transition to diet pop and regular pop sometimes. Now it has become water, tea and real pop sometimes. Its cheaper but its just one of those things that took me awhile to change.
Make half your plate veggies - do not overuse oils or butter. But just doing this will take away pounds because most veggies are so low calorie.

Activity
What do you do?
Try to get at least 30 minutes of doing ANYTHING that gets you dewy and your pulse up a bit everyday. This can be as simple as a walk. Break it up into a morning 15 and an evening 15 if you don't want to do to the full 30. Walking before dinner will boost your metabolism a bit.

And if you are ready to be a little more serious check out "spark people"
(google it) It gives you dietary guidelines, exercise and a digital journal to track it all in. Plus the articles they have are really nice and written plainly and positive. Its all custom to your stats and the equipment that you have available to you. (no gym required)

Ok, what if you don't have time to cook healthy? Are the frozen meals good enough i.e. Smart ones or lean cuisine? Also, I really only cook for myself because my one year old eats those graduate meals.
How long is it again to change a habit?

You can eat healthy without spending tons of time.....a turkey sandwich on whole grain or wheat is fast and healthy.....edemame as I think I stated previously is really good for you (high in protein) and is litterally ready in like 2 minutes.....peeling an orange, biting into an apple, heating some healthy ones chicken soup, squares of natural cheese with grapes...fast, celery with peanutbutter, grilling up some turkey burgers on the stove, replacing starchy potato sides with sweet potato's fast and inexpensive....there are TONS of things you can do that take no more time than anything else.....baby food is fast....lol okay laugh at me but it's packed with nutrients and low in fat if you get the right ones
I say no to frozen means because they typically have tons of sodium and are preserved.....yuck
