Your body is always burning calories no matter what activity you are doing. Just that some activities are a lot slower in burning them than others. Yes, you can burn some with stretching, but if you really want to lose weight a little sooner, then you'll have to do some type of cardio (i.e. bike riding, jogging/running, long walks, hiking, swimming, etc). These activities burn calories faster and you can maintain/lose weight better.
Let me just chime in and say you're right! Eat right, exercise -- especially useful to add stretching to prevent tightness, strains, sprains and the like. Right, too, about "the burn". I found an online way to keep track of how many calories burned at this site that brings like-minded fitness seekers together for social networking. Good to know that others share my concerns.
It absolutely burn calories but if you really want to look slim, mix stretching with jogging, walking. You can even try kickboxing, taekwando, karate and many more. You not only burning some un wanted fats but you can also learn self defense .
