Default popping knee caps

I just joined a gym b/c it's been too cold to walk outside and I want to get in shape fast. Also to blow off steam from an impending divorce. My problem is this: I love the recumbent bikes, but lately I've noticed that when I get on and start cycling, my knee caps start popping around--it doesn't hurt, but it seems like it could if I let it go on long enough. I've been extending my leg out in front of me when it starts to do that, but it seems like I'm having to do that more and more often. I've never had knee problems before, though when I squat down really fast, my knee will give a loud crack--it's always done that since I can remember. Anybody else have that problem?

I have something called floating patellas, which could be similar to what you're experiencing... I feel more of a sliding sometimes, where I can literally feel the kneecap going in & out of the "socket." I'm supposed to have surgery in the near future, but have been putting it off for a few reasons. Anyway, I would suggest seeing a doctor if this is hindering your activities - at the very least, they can recommend some stretching/strengthening exercises, or better ways to work out. In the meantime, it's probably good to avoid anything that aggravates it, like the bike, squats & rowing machines.

Btw, my Uncle is an orthopedic surgeon, and he has a knee exercise that he swears by. I'll try to explain... basically lay on your back with legs straight out, then lift them about 1-2 inches off the ground and hold it for 5 seconds. Do that a few times, and then increase the length & repetitions every day. He claims that if you eventually do this for 10 minutes twice a day, it will cure almost any general knee ailments. I keep promising to do it myself, but motivation isn't my strong point - LOL. Hope you feel better!

Hey thanks gizmo--I think I get it--you try to lift your feet off the floor w/o lifting your knee--like overextending it? I think that will help b/c overextending my leg is what's making it stop--I just have to do it several times. Sliding in and out of the socket is exactly what it feels like. Actually I hope you get better--I don't have any pain yet.
