Every time I start running or doing intense cardio after having not exercised in a while I immediately gain weight. It is always temporary weight gain but after the 2nd day I get on the scale and I am always 5 pounds heavier. After a week or so it goes away but I have no idea why this happens. It never fails. I know its not muscle gain because you gain muscle slowly over time and even than its usually 1-2 pounds.

Does anyone else experience this?

Yes! Without fail this happens to me every time I start working out after a long hiatus. I just recently started working out again and I've noticed the weight gain.

I wonder what it is?
I considered water weight but you would think you would be losing water instead.

Its so frustrating but I just remind myself its temporary.
I just wish I knew what causes it.

If you're not used to working out... you might eat a ton before or after and not notice it. You might also take in a lot of water that your body holds.

I usually lose 4-5 pounds of water weight from the time I go to sleep until I get up... but I also drink like 2 gallons a day

its water weight. Eating carbs or salt will make it worse.

Well I agree that it may be water weight but what causes the gain in water weight?

The cardio? Because usually cardio eliminates my water weight.
The only time I gain with cardio is when I start doing cardio again after a long hiatus.

I can't see any possibility other than water weight. It doesn't sound like that's the case for you, but taking creatine or drinking some sports drinks can increase this effect.

Hi guys! I hear its because of muscle soreness (DOMS) , your body sends fluid to your muscles (even cardio) to protect and defend the area. A lil bit of swelling that could be unnoticed. Happens even if you are not sore.. This causes people to become discouraged and quit their workout but dont!!! It is temporary
