Honestly would recommend you find a way to work with a therapist.

The key to successful recovery from an ACL reconstruction is therapy and it really should be supervised by someone who knows how much to push without going too far...

I'm sure you could google up some ideas, and you might even find success in doing so. That being said, there are so many different variables as to which exercises will be right for you and which will be wrong, it is a bit on the risky side to go it alone or on the advice of anyone who is not physically with you.

That being said, if you are having a hard time affording PT, come up with the funds to go at least once or twice, and let the PT know your financial situation and see how much they can give you to go work with on your own once they have evaluated you and can give you the proper instruction. I have had to do that with my shoulder. I needed a good bit of PT, but could really only afford 4 sessions. My therapist worked with me on developing a plan I could follow on my own in 3 sessions, and I have tucked away the money for 1 more session so if I am having problems I can go back and get her help again.

I had this done 9 years ago...please go for PT. I had to go for 4 weeks @ 3x's a week for 45 mins. Perhaps, you could go for less time??

Surgery cost how much? You want to risk that and possibly doing more damage?

Wife has recently been through this, and her exercises have changed as things improve or hurt.

Two things....each very important after knee surgery. Strengthening and range of motion.

I would go into your gym and talk to a PT....many of them are way more understanding and generous than you might think. I've trained many pro-bono because of situations like this but you can at least try .

In general though, you need to strengthen your thigh muscles as the stronger those muscles are the less you will depend on your knee thus, relieving much of the strain you may currently be putting on it. At the same time, increase the range of motion you have in your knee...stretching is really important....

I am unsure what you would do with a torn ACL after surgery if you wont see a PT. Your first search should be google to see what comes up. I would imagine swimming will increase range of motion and muscle strength with no impact whatsoever to joints/ligaments. Outside of that there is probably stretching and possibly working out with some bands. Get some type of professional advice though before you do something foolish like go running up hill drunk with ankle weights on.

While I did not have knee surgery, I broke my shoulder and arm last year and did go to PT. Make sure that your surgeon knows what type of exercises that you are doing. My therapist had me lifting weights and my doctor was not happy when he found out and told me to stop lifting weights immediately. Even though he had written a prescription, it was not being followed. You want to recover as quickly as possible and not do any damage.

I had an ACL repair five years ago and feel strongly that some PT is essential if you want to get the most out of your surgery. I initially went 2 - 3 times a week then after 3 weeks cut back to once a week. Go ahead and tell the therapist that money is tight and you are really interested in doing at much at home on your own as possible. They should be able to design some good home exercise so you don't have to be seen as often as long as you are progressing as expected.
