Knee pain from Running
My knee has been hurting, but it is not the "usual" sort of knee pain that I have experienced in the past. (In the past I have had knee pain where it hurts walking DOWN stairs or down hill, which I believe is pretty common and not really harmful- aka "runners knee" I believe).
This current/ new pain I am experiencing:
1. Is in my left knee- sort of on the right side (inside) of my left knee cap.
2. Hurts mostly if I try to bend my knee all the way.
3. Tends to get worse after sitting for a fairly long time. (Is slightly sore while walking. Is painful enough to limp after a long sitting).
any ideas?
It is not excruciating and I would like to continue running, but i obviously want to be sure that I am not damaging my knee by doing so. Has anyone experienced the above 3 symptoms? Any ideas?

I just went through this! Left leg, inside of my knee cap. Went to my ortho doc and he thought it was for sure a torn meniscus. I had an MRI to confirm and I actually had a fractured tibia. Some kind of common fracture amoung runners. Mine did not hurt when I bent it. Mine was more sore when I went up/down stairs and walked. But, mine was a nondisplaced fracture and only required a brace and rest. I am all healed up and have my 'go ahead' to start running this coming week.

Torn or worn down cartilage? Could be meniscus damage as well. Who knows? You'll need a super expensive MRI to tell you.

You didn't mention your age. Could be age related - bone spur, osteoarthritis, or? Best self-cure is to rest it for a week or more and see what it's like then. If soreness or pain continues, time to see an orthopedic specialist.

37. I actually ran 5 miles today and the knee is NOT good. Worst it has ever been. I was hoping this was something I could just run through!! It does not look that way. Oh well.... definitely taking a rest and see how it goes. Without some serious improvement, I think I am going to see an orthopedic spec. as suggested.

If it hurts a lot when you are sitting, you could have chondromylacia (which is what i have). My PT called it "movie theatre knee" b/c your knee starts acting up when you sit at a movie theatre (or in a car, a meeting, or 24/7 for me..). I need knee surgery to fix this as PT couldn't help. It is a fairly common problem and has taken me away for running for about 3 years now...blah. No matter what, get it checked out. You don't want to run through your knee problems and make them worse!

I have never been comfortable running, even when I was young and in good physical condition. Later in life I had to give up my favorite sport - tennis - because I couldn't take that pounding any longer either.
What I have had good luck with is bicycling. I've been doing that for over forty years, avidly. That meant 7-10 day vacation trips on a bicycle, loaded with camping gear when I was younger. I still ride for an hour and a half every other day. Bicycling is the one exercise that is universally recommended by orthopedic doctors for people recovering from knee surgery. I had one knee replaced last October, and was back on my bike in the 5th week after surgery - rode for a solid hour. Now I'm scheduled to have the other knee replaced this coming October (next month).

could be bruised knee cartilage or some other overuse injury. Rest and possibly physical therapy. How old are your shoes?

Go to the PT, have them take a look. It could be something as simple as needing better stretching, or new shoes. Do it sooner than later, you don't want to make it worse than it already is!
