Default lets talk about eating clean

I see this so much linked to exercise. I got the eggs, proteins, veggies. Here is the hard part, can I have a damn slice of whole grain bread or carbs that are starchy ?? I am not a huge fan of oatmeal, what carbs can one eat to eat clean???? List some ideas for all types of clean foods . I cant live my life on eggs, chicken and steamed veggies!!!

Of course you can eat whole grain breads, in fact, they are highly recommended. For anyone wanting to eat healthy, you absolutely must have the carbs.

Just stay away from anything white or that is heavily processed.

Some recommendations:

Whole grain bread
Trader Joes Mixed hot cereal - Oats, Rye and Barley
Whole Wheat pastas
Brown Rice

Other clean foods:

Sweet potatoes
Green veggies - spinach and broccoli are my favs
bananas
fish (grilled fish or chunk light tuna in the can)
Kidney beans
Almond Butter and jelly sandwiches on whole wheat bread
Horizon Organic cottage cheese (I dont like Knudsen) with almond slivers and yogurt or blueberries

Small quantities of complex carbs never hurt anyone, generally speaking. Lavash is a flat bread, and thinner than pita bread. I am thin and active, and I can't imagine a life without at least some simple carbs. I eat nut butters on small pieces of flat bread. Standard store breads just have too much weird stuff. I refrigerate flat breads, and they keep a long time. Low salt, multigrain crackers are good, too. I eat cous cous, tabouli, and quinoa.

You miss out on a lot of vitamins and minerals when you cut out carbs. isn't it obvious that they're important when they are part of proteins/cabohydrates/fats?
Plus, that is where a lot of your fiber comes from. yest, they are absolutely neccessary!!

Really? My most recent blood work shows that I am not deficient in any vitamins.

Most of your vitamins will come from vegetables, as will your fiber. If you're like me and don't like alot vegetables you can always take a multivitamin and/or a fiber supplement.

Since you mentioned "most of your recent blood work" I think I can correctly assume that you may have some ongoing health issues possibly pertaining to your weight (or issues resulting from at one time being overweight). I also see you have expereince (based on your posts on another thread) about low carb diets.

Most people who go on low carb diets (or any diet for that matter) do so because of health and/or weight issues. I mentioned in my post that carbs are important for a healthy diet because what I believe is a healthy diet is one where you 1) get all the nutrients your body needs to fuel itself properly; and 2) One that is balanced enough to maintain top performance for an athlete (which I am).

I NEVER EVER do low carb, no carb, no protein, no this or no that diet because my health and physical performance is of top priority to me and I fuel my body with what will make it run on an optimal level. This really is why I try to never even use the term "diet" in my posts. Healthy Nutrition is a better word.

When I talk to people I train, I never tell the to diet. I explain how important it is to eat HEALTHILY and to keep physically active. Diets are for people who need to lose weight or have problems with their health, not for people who are concerned about fitness. Carbs are IMPORTANT and people who are concerned with their level of fitness/health, should not be on a low or no carb diet.

The blood work was part of my physical for a police department I applied to, which is S.O.P. To date, my only real major medical issue was a staph infection I dealt with at the end of 2007, but that was cleared up without much trouble.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that low carb diets are the only way to go, but I do disagree with the idea that a low carb diet will not work for athletes. I know this first hand (I used a low carb diet during part of my high school football days) and second hand (several friends who are very athletic and use the diet.)
