Default The 1,000 mile challenge for 2010

"But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks A THOUSAND MILES
To fall down at your door" ... The Proclaimers

A little music for you while I describe what I have in mind.

YouTube - The Proclaimers perform "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" Backstage

Does anyone want to join me in my challenge to walk one thousand miles? For the year 2010, I plan to walk one thousand miles as my victory lap over cancer (diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma). When I shared this plan with others, there were a few folks who expressed an interest in doing the same thing, for a variety of different reasons. Someone suggested putting it up as a thread here at City Data so that others who wanted to participate could do so. Here it is. I've placed it into the Exercise and Fitness forum because I think it's the best fit.

I'm going to use the challenge to rehab and recover myself and hopefully get back into better shape than I was during 2009. Between surgery and other invasive procedures, intravenous chemotherapy, spinal cord chemotherapy, radiation therapy (starting this week) and over a dozen prescription medications, treatment has really taken it's toll on my body. It will take an effort such as this one to undo the effects of a year of treatments and drugs. My personal goal will be to walk one thousand miles and reduce my weight from a very frightening 290 (oh those steroids!) down to as close to 200 as I can get it.

You might use this program for weight loss, or recovery from injury, or reconditioning your body, or training for a particular event, or just because you think it's a good idea to enhance your sense of wellness. Or maybe you just like the idea of a challenge. You don't need a reason, only the desire to get up from the computer and walk. I don't see this thread taking the form of a journal, although I'm sure that there will be some conversation of our various accomplishments. I see this more as a conversation and chance to support and encourage each other. It could become a chatty thread, but we'll try to keep it on topic as best we can.

If you're interested in joining me, welcome aboard. The conversation starts here. We'll spend the rest of 2009 getting ready by measuring out routes near our homes, assuring that we have decent walking shoes/sneakers, making sure we know about things like stretching, walking safety, nutrition tips and how we can support each other. Then, when the clock starts on January 1, 2010, we'll be ready to begin a journey that should conclude in good health, better conditioning and a challenge met.

Let's get healthy together. All are welcome. I'm getting myself on the road to fitness. Care to come with me?

Charlie, I checked my email and there isn't anything there from you... even in my spam. I don't know where it went, but I'm glad you accepted my request to open your challenge up for any of us who would also like to take part.

I for one have ongoing issues with hypothyroidism which has given me fibromyalgia, and now high bp, weight gain, and a myriad of other annoying physical issues. Two major hurdles are my two bad knees which I mentioned to you. I've had surgery on my right, but now the left needs it and the right one is weak again after 5 years of use and babying the left. I know I have a very steep hill to climb to be successful in this challenge, but I'd like to give it my all. Even if I can only manage 500 miles, it's 500 more than what I'm doing now!!

You have been such an inspiration for me to witness as you went through this wickedly difficult year. What a trooper you are!!!!!

Looking forward to 2010 Charley and walking with you in cyber space!

Thanks again for accepting the idea of iniviting anyone who'd like to come along with you and share their experiences. I think we can all help each other along as we push ourselves to meet our goal/s.

Well, the math is right, but my approach will be different. I'll probably do no more than a mile a day to start during the winter months and as my body improves (and as it gets warmer) my mileage will increase. This won't be about speed, so for those who intend to "stroll" 1,000 a miles, that's fine too.

A little more math: The average person expends approximately 100 calories per mile, regardless of speed. 100 calories x 1000 miles = 100,000 calories, divided by 3,500 (calories needed to lose one pound) and at the end of this challenge, the average person will have lost over 28 pounds! Not bad.

Yeah winter will be tough, I usually walk starting in the spring, this year not so much. When I do it's only 3-4 miles. I may have to find a place that is closer than the walking trail (city) about 8 miles from my house.

I hate that song, Charley, but I love your idea and your enthusiasm. You are a true inspiration. How could I say no?

I have walking routes from my house that measure one, two and four miles so that I basically have my choice of almost any combinations right from my front door. I'm also very lucky in that "around the block" for me is exactly one-third of a mile.

We also have a lake that's about 7 or 8 miles from my house that has a great three mile walking path around it. I'll be spending lots of time there when spring rolls around.

(CoastalMaine, I hope you don't mind that I am only quoting part of your wonderful post.)

Charley and YOU both have been an inspiration to many people. I am so happy that you made this thread suggestion to Charley - and, I think you may consider yourself a Charter Member!!

Many of us have physical problems that tend to create other issues (high BP, overweight, weak muscles, etc.), but doing something as simple as starting to walk just 2 blocks initially and working up to a mile or so within a year is a wonderful, inspiring goal.

Thank you for passing this great idea on to Charley to put it into action here on a CD thread - WHERE, by the nature of what we do here, we are on our bottoms for a large portion of every day. This will help so many of us to get our bodies in tip-top condition to fight the challenges of becoming "more mature". Thanks, CM and Charley!

Be well, both of you. Thanks for the encouragement, Charley.

Charley, you have inspired all of us in so many ways. Your courage, your sharing, your determination have raised the bar for many of us. I hope I can be just like you when I grow up!

Thank you for the invite and count me in! You know I've started a walking regimen using my trusty pedometer and going for a certain number of steps per day (which also translates into miles). In the good weather I average 4-5 miles a day so far but I'm concerned about the winter months (since I prefer to walk outside but don't like slippy ice and harsh winter winds).

Looking forward to supporting/motivating each other and sharing our ideas/progress One tip I can share for those just starting out is to get a pedometer - mine is a simple Omron brand that counts steps, "aerobic steps", calories, miles, and has a clock. For me, it is a great way to keep track (stores 7 days of activity) and stay motivated/set goals. I wear it all day - you can start out just getting up and walking inside your own house during commercials or at other regular intervals throughout your day and see how many steps you can rack up!

BTW, I love that song, Charley - it has special meaning for me and my man and will definitely motivate me during our challenge!
