I understand that it's now dark when you get home from work, but does that really prevent you from running? Why? Is your neighborhood that bad? I don't get it. I'm a runner myself and run both oustide at night sometimes and also at my gym on the treadmill. Funny, I guees I'm one of the rare people who actually DIG the "dreadmill" as some people call it. The ones at my gym are high-end models, with tv's mounted in front, so that relieves the boredom somewhat.
That said, my advice to you, since you need to train for your 13-miler, is to buck-up and withstand the monotony and use the treadmill. If you're a runner and know about interval training and Yasso 800's and all that, than you'll find the tread is actually pretty convenient for that stuff. Also, you can use the incline adjustment to simulate hills.

What is preventing me from running outside after dark is being a female. I don’t feel safe running alone in the dark. I guess men don’t really worry about things like that.

I'm a new runner, been running since about April of this year. I didn’t know about the Yasso 800’s. I read about it and I think this will be a great way to spend my time on the “Dreadmill” Thanks for mentioning it.

I still run when it's cool or cold out, but if it's snowing then I don't do it. Instead, on a snowy day, I just do one of my intense Aerobics DVD (it's 100 minutes long). It has aerobics, light weight training, and Pilates at the end. It's A WORKOUT!!! No doubt...

But if it's higher than 45 degrees or so, and it's not raining or snowing, I'll still go running/jogging.

Funny, because I love love LOVE to run in the snow. I really like the big soft feathery flakes the best. I use running as my main winter exercise. I'll run outside into the low teens. It's all about having the correct gear. If it's 45F or above I'm on my bicycle!

If it's super-duper cold (single digits) or icy out I do yoga, lift weights, spin on the trainer in the basement.

I dunno how you guys do it, I could never run if it was below 40, its brutal on my lungs. ... And given it is usually colder in the morning and evening, that was pretty often. My gym had an indoor track though so I just ran there, but that gets extremely boring. So basically when I lived where there was a winter, I would just bulk up a bit and hit the weights more.

Here in Europe : we have daylight between 7.30 and 16.00 hrs.

This does not stop me from running when I finish work between 17.00 - 18.00hrs.

Regardless of the weather conditions, I run for 45 minutes, outdoor.
Hail/rain/sleet/snow.

Can't run on a treadmill : far too boring.

Run outdoors all the time.
Much more interesting and varied.
