I did a search and mostly saw threads for Wii Fit, does anyone hoop with an actual hula hoop? I got into it a few months ago, made my own hoop, and i'm totally addicted. I'm lucky to have an open floor plan so I can hoop in my living room, play music, and have a blast. I can't do a lot of tricks but it's fun to try and learn new ones!
I have a hoop, too. i have 2 videos that teach tricks. I am able to spin it over my head and bring it down to hoop. Also i can move the hoop up and down as I am spinning as well as walk with it as it's spinning. A lot of fun!
I'm better at hand hooping than on the body tricks - I can't shoulder or chest hoop to save my life! I can a do this one neat elbow trick (most of the time) and that's it:
Im going to practice this tomorrow! thanks. My videos are packed away (im in a temporary home til i buy). when you spin it above your head, hold the hoop loosely, kinda like she shows in the vid above. spin hoop over head, but you spin in the same direction, too. raise the other arm into the hoop as you bring it down to your waist. and you'll learn to time it when to bring the hoop down.

I'm a personal trainer and a total fitness freak, but while I understand that hula hooping could be an excellent way to get a bit if a cardio workout while toning your core, I just couldn't do it. I'd have to turn in my "Man Card" if I was caught in public. LOL.
Lots of guys hula hoop! If you aren't interested that's fine, but don't let some silly gender stereotypes get in the way. From what I can tell, most of the men who hoop are also into 'extreme' sports like skate boarding and BMX biking - so they're in it for the tricks.
stoymonkey, I can get it up and back down, but that's really about it. I can also get it down on my legs and back up to my waist. When I first started I tried to do a bunch of tricks and failed, so for now i'm working on building up my strength and having fun, then i'll start trying new tricks again. I kind of became obsessed with the elbow trick though, because that's all timing so I knew I could do it! You have to be careful practicing it indoors, the hoop will go flying!
I didnt get a chance today, but will take it and the video outside on the deck! you said you made your own hoop? i have an unwrapped black one, don't know where to get the tape for it. i could pay $20 for someone to do it at the gym. if you taped it, how did you get it even??
There is a Lululemon Athletica store near me and they occasionally have a lady there with hula hoops where you can "workout" with her. Like a free hula hoop class.
