Depends what you call a walk. If you are going for a leisurely stroll and not paying attention to the walk as if it were "exercise" per se, then 18 minutes or so is normal. If you go on a walk for a "purpose", 15 minutes or under.

People significantly taller than me, who have never done anything but stroll casually, can't keep up. So one determinant is how motivated you are.
Longer stride length doesn't equal better efficiency. Often times shorter strides and higher strides per minutes are actually better especially as the distance increases

I walk at a steady 3 mph, so it would take 20 minutes to walk a mile for me at my normal pace.

20 minutes is a good average. For fitness, working toward a 15-minute mile is a good goal.

Thumbs up Pace for 5k for older man!

3.11 mi Distance; 13:55 min/mi Avg Pace
438 C Calories
43:18 Time
15 ft Elev Gain

Today's activity as per my Garmin Vivosmart HR+ activity tracker on a flat surface/outside in local park!
Male/68 years old and in fairly good shape; former runner for 10 years but knees won't take it anymore!

My friends average 18-20 min per mile for their pace which is OK but slow for me!

It takes me around 8-9 minutes to run a mile on regular terrain. But that’s really different when it comes to hiking. Hiking that one mile takes me around 13-15 minutes, depending. I actually have an article about it that you can check out plus all the benefits of walking a mile a day. You can find it on How Long Should It Take To Walk A Mile? (All You Need To Know)

It really depends on who I am walking with, but on average I walk a 16 minute mile.

There are so many factors that come in to play, are the roads clear and dry? Am I walking alone or with someone? Am I gaining any elevation?

I'm more concerned about the distance, and not so much.the speed. I walked 175 miles in May. I am hoping to beat that number in July. June is.out of the question since I'm on a two week vacation and even though I'm walking, I'm not able to find the time to walk eight miles or more like I was able to last month.

Default how many minutes to walk a mile for average person

I walk a mile usually in 12 minutes, 42 seconds on a treadmill at the gym, at a speed of 4.9 mph. I resolve never to leave the gym without walking over 4 miles in an hour. I'm 63 years old. I refuse to jog.

I use 3mph on the treadmill as an unofficial guide and it's a decent clip.

So I'd say on average if I were taking it easy and walking, maybe 20 minutes per mile.
