So I have been getting into shape and jog 3 miles about 2-3 times a week. Well I joined a soccer league and all I can say is that I am out of shape. I was out of breath within minutes and I am still sore 2 days after playing. So my question to you all is this: Does jogging really do anything?
I am thinking of going back to my high school days and doing suicides and more sprint based excercise instead of jogging.
At the speed ~many~ people "jog", really, they'd be better off walking. Seriously, it's easier on the joints.
I think you've pretty much answered your own question.
If people "jog" because it gets them out of the house and makes them feel better, more power to 'em. But if they expect any sort of super-fitness from slogging along for three miles everyday....not gonna happen.
I find that the way I easily build up endurance is by doing intervals on the treadmill. Walk at a decent pace (say 4) for 2 minutes, jog/run at 7 for 2 minutes, and etc. Modify it to fit how you're feeling, but still try to push yourself. You should find it becoming easier and you'll notice that you'll be able to increase the speed and time.
I did solely intervals as my cardio for a few weeks and then when I decided to just do some basic jogging on a trail, I was surprised by my new found endurance.
So I have been getting into shape and jog 3 miles about 2-3 times a week.
Working out 2-3 days a week will not be enough to build up endurance; jogging has nothing to do with this. You are not being physical long-enough or consistent enough. You also failed to mentioned how long you have been actively jogging and your minutes per mile.
I think your assessment is a bit unfair. Now, if you said you have been routinely jogging 20+ miles a week and your still out of breath regarding some physical activity, then it would make sense to decide whether your jogging (based on distance and time) is affective enough for physical endurance.

NOOOO!!! Jogging is the best workout for your heart, lungs, and endurance. Keep jogging. It does get better, trust me. I've been an avid jogger since I was 14 years old (about 20 years now). It does get better.
It's great for your heart to pump for efficiently and your lungs can get rid of the toxins in it much better through jogging. Maybe you should jog 4-5 times a week, instead of 2-3times. The more you do it, the more interesting it gets and it does get better.

True, but walking takes so much a longer time to lose weight and burn calories. I love walking too, I alternate walking with jogging (I get a better workout like that). But for some folks, walking is just too slow and boring for them (for me too, at times, so I jog/run every other day now). If jogging is done consistently (at least 4 times a week or more), it will get you in good shape and lose the weight you need to lose. Just have to be consistent with it (just like everything else in life, it gets better with consistency). Sporadically, will not get you no where...
Ok so worthless is probably too strong a word but I hope you can understand my frustration. I don't want to harp on why I can't run all day on the field so let me pose a more constructive question.
I am thinking of doing suicides as my cardio after I lift. Then on the weekends try to go for a long run, starting from 3 miles and working to say 6 (I would like to do a 10k at some point). Would this work the best for increasing endurance?
As a former soccer player I'd say that jogging would NOT get you in shape for a game of soccer. There is a lot of sprinting, and I know I wouldn't be capable of doing them unless I trained regularly.
Throw some sprinting into your workout regimen. Or do intervals while jogging-jog 3 minutes, sprint 30 seconds. Suicides really bust your butt, but hard on the knees.

Exactly what I was thinking. Jogging is great exercise but it won't get you in shape for a sport that requires a lot of sprinting. Just as doing suicides won't get you ready for running a marathon and cycling won't get you in great shape for swimming.
