I can jump on an elliptical or an exercise bike and get a good sweat going in about six or eight minutes. But I noticed that my respiration never went much above normal. It was as though my muscles would max-out short of my anaerobic threshold.

Then I got this idea of doing essentially wind sprints on the elliptical and on an exercise bike. I'd slow down to a low pace, then go at full-blast for about fifteen seconds. I'd do this for perhaps ten minutes. It's a good anaerobic workout on what's considered an aerobic device.

I've done this myself on cardio days. Works pretty well.

Yeah, I could use some advice on doing a modified version of HIIT on an elliptical. I just can't seem to wrap my mind around how to use an elliptical for a great cardio workout!

This is how I use the elliptecal as its the best thing for my hip and back.

5 min warm up - easy pace.. then i'll switch to either staying forward or going backward... every 30 seconds hitting up the intensity... back off the resistance until 3... then a sprint forward 1-2 songs.. (may switch it up to do one back).... recover maybe ... then another backward or forward kicking up the resistance every 30 seconds.... rinse and repeat for 40 min... Each section is 1 song.. i have 2 playlists that I've put together specifically for this.

I own an elliptical and find that I can get a fantastic workout on it. I'm able to do steady-state cardio and intervals. What brand of elliptical are you using?

The normal kind? I'll have to take notes tomorrow at the gym. I definitely sweat on the elliptical. . . I'm just unsure if it's that effective of a cardio workout mainly because a.) it's user guided, unlike a treadmill, and b.) the machine kind of helps you with the motion, also unlike a treadmill. Hell, maybe I'm just one of those people that has to be jogging and running to feel like they're working out.

It's effective, it's all about how you use it.
