That's actually a curious difference between the interior and southcentral. Down here, they dump really fine sand on the roads, but in the interior it's pretty much gravel.

They do spread crushed gravel at some of the roads in Fairbanks, and also at the highway ramps. A real bad area to drive through in the morning rush hour is on Peger between Airport Way and Spenards Building Supplies, and also at the ramps leading to the Johansen. You should see my windshield

I will never forget the first time I drove up here. It was in town everyone else was driving cafefully slowish so then this one car got behind me, I stopped at the stop sign put on my signal to turn, I hear the car behind me revving up, blowing the horn so I get out of the way, and then see this older granny lady shaking her fist at me, sheesh! My friend was with me and telling me how to drive it and I didnt do anything wrong. It didnt exactly make me feel like a confident driver. Being from Alabama I have never driven in snow but I am trying my best.

It takes time, and a good set of tires help you get there

We were backing into a parking spot on the last row at Sam's Club on Saturday, when some dippy girl in a Tacoma tried to zip around us through the parking spaces. My guy was focused on a fire hydrant in his passenger side mirror that he didn't want to hit, and we didn't see her until after we hit her. We hit her right in the rear tire with our ball hitch and it made a 4-inch crack in her tire, but that was the only damage. She was going so fast that not only could she not stop when she saw our backup lights (as if us blocking the whole lane wasn't enough of a clue), but the impact slung her all the way around until she was parallel with us. Can't believe people do such stupid stuff instead of just waiting a second. At least we were close to a tire shop and didn't have to help change a tire at -40.

Later that day as we were driving back up the hill to our friends' house we passed another dippy girl, walking down the road in jeans, a jacket, thin gloves, and no hat. She had her hands over her ears when we passed her, and we turned around to give her a ride. Apparently she was trying to meet some friends who couldn't follow directions to the place she was staying, had already walked about a mile and a half at -25F, and was trying to walk another three miles or so. Crazy that anyone would try something like that.

Hi 1stimestar,

It was absolutely insane yesterday too! Oh my goodness, the most unique fog I've seen since being here. I went to the barnes & noble and had I not known it was there I wouldn't have gone. I couldn't see it from the road one bit! Ay ay aye.

Hey, fwiw I ordered msyelf some Verilux Happy lights, (2 for 69 bucks.) I truly "get" it that the biggest adjustment is NOT the cold it is the diminished daylight as well.

After working 25 years or so on shiftwork and midnights and in non-windowed workplaces I didn't expect to notice it so drastically but, I do. This AND I am taking vitamin d.

As always tstimestar, good to read you. Neighbor!
