Considering a move to Fairbanks.
Hello all. My family and I are considering a move to Fairbanks. I am a 15 yr aircraft mechanic and my wife is a jr high teacher. I have had a few phone interviews with some shops in Fairbanks and all looks good. Right now we are trying to decide on an area in or commuting distance to Fairbanks. We would prefer a smaller town than Fairbanks, we live in a small town of 400 in rural Illinois. We have 4 small children all under the age of 6. We will want to rent a house the first year or 2. If anyone could throw some locations for me to check on, I would really appreciate it.

Your first year I'd try to find something fairly close to Fairbanks. Get a lay of the land, figure out what is where, help your wife get a job, then look for a place to settle down.

Good advice. In my search for rentals I have seen some decent homes for lease in North Pole, but I think the winter commute time would be a bit long, to Fairbanks.

North Pole or Ester would be close, Salcha a bit further but there are lots of rural areas within Fairbanks. I've only been to Ester once. North Pole has a Safeway so you wouldn't always have to drive to Fairbanks.

Pretty much anywhere just outside of fairbanks you'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. I'd look for something in the Goldstream, Ester, or Fox areas. North Pole isn't too far out and an easy (if annoying) commute. If you'd like to be farther away, look at spots on Chena Hot Springs Road/ Two Rivers area.

Living in North Pole compared to Fairbanks is more expensive. Gasoline and diesel fuel costs from 20-35 cents more per gallon than in Fairbanks. The only supermarket is Safeway, but besides the high cost of most products, there is a 3% sales tax.

your going to end up shopping in Fairbanks, big grocery stores ect. as there are no other options. Plenty of quite places just outside of Fairbanks city limits though. If your working in airport liimit your searching to Fairbanks and Ester.

The sales tax has been 4% for several years now. Even though I live in NP, I never buy my gas there. We're in Fairbanks everyday for work, etc. and fill up there. It now costs us around $100 per week/per car for gas! If I had to do it again we would buy a house across the street from where we work.
