Although I can't say that Wild Rice is in Alaska - there is a Wild Rice Lake on Chichagof Island in southeast Alaska, aka the Alaska Panhandle. It may be that it is plant which resembles that plant or the fruit of the plant.

Perhaps the indigenous Tlingit Native's brought it with them when they first settled the area somewhere in the range of 10,000 years ago.
