You know what I'm talking about, is it safe? Do you need a lot of outdoor experience to get there? Do lots of people visit It?

BayAreaDave, I assume you have watched the movie or read the book into the wild. How did that turn out for the main character, Chris McCandless?

While I assume you are not going to try and live in the bus or out in the wild - to me that is enough to prove it is dangerous.

Other people have died just trying to get to/from the bus.... If you have to ask if you need outdoor experience to get there, please don't go. I'm not even an Alaskan and I know better. I looked at the route to the bus - you can google earth it too. The part that worries me the most, besides needing to spend a couple of nights "in the wild" is that water crossing and how unpredictable the river is. It is what inevitably, prevented McCandless from leaving the bus and ultimately lead to his death, at least in my opinion. The river is what gets the inexperienced the most as well.

At a minimum you need to be in shape to do the hike, able to carry supplies for a couple of days. Know how to cross a dangerous river. Obviously you need to do it at least twice.

People do visit it. There are so many other beautiful things to see in AK I can't imagine spending my time to go see the bus someone died in. Just my .02.

9 out of 10 people who've visited the bus have gone on to commit suicide by jumping out of a basement window.

Strange, but true.

No it's not safe. Yes you need a lot of out door and survival experience. Carry enough food and water for a week and have a satellite phone or and EPIRB. And if you don't know what an EPIRB is then you really shouldn't do it. Oh and have some thank-you gifts for the rescue team that comes and gets you. They get grumpy having to pull tourists out of the brush.

This is a good article to read for the "pilgrims" wanting to visit the bus. 'Pilgrims' flock to site of death in Alaska's wilds | The Japan Times
