Hello everyone!
So we're on orders to Ft. Wainwright and will be driving from Ft. Hood. We'll be leaving around the 25/26 of October. How are the road conditions during that time along the ALCAN? I know from TX up to Dawson Creek we'll be good. But once we're at Dawson Creek on thru, eBay should we expect. Would we be ok to wait until we got to Alaska to get our cars winterized and get the proper tires? We'll either be driving our 2015 Chevy traverse or our 2015 dodge ram hemisphere. Suggestions please. Thank you in advance

It was 33f at my cabin this morning[not far from Anchorage as the crow flies], and there is a big storm going to hit tomorrow. Next month? Who knows? Best to be prepared for everything. Get a Milepost too

If unaccustomed to dramatic weather changes on what is essentially an industrial throughway poses a concern, perhaps you should consider the Alaska Ferry. Avoids the over-the-road concerns and is not surprisingly a rather enjoyable cruise.

Compare price(s) of highway (fuel, tires repairs, lodging, meals) versus a seagoing (mostly inside passage route) cruise.

Good luck.

The ferry (especially with two vehicles) typically works out more expensive. And unless you can time it right and get a ticket on the cross gulf ferry, you still have a couple of days of driving from Haines up through Canada.

So you'll still need passports. And I second the vote for The Bible of North Country Travel - The MILEPOST . In my opinion it's the essential guide to the drive.
You will definitely encounter winter weather. Be prepared. Plan your fuel stops. You'll be fine without a block heater, but have a spare key. That way you can leave it running but locked up if needed.
You'll need to be legal to enter Canada. No DUI's, no felonies. Pets will need records. You'll want winter tires at that point.
