I am so happy that Fairbanks will be getting a Target. Goodness knows that we need it. They seem to keep putting in more and more high priced Sporting goods stores but not ones that carry stuff for everyday use. Heck maybe one day they will add a Yankee Candle and a Bath and Body Works and maybe just maybe a Best Buy or Circuit City. And heaven forbid maybe an Olive Garden.
I like small town but there is so much of Fairbanks that is closed up and sitting vacant it would be nice to see some new life instead of just empty buildings.

Yes to reuse empty buildings is a great idea. A few new stores would add to the economy.

Oct 2010 is the "target date" they quoted. Ouch. A frigg'n huge store according to the article (economies of scale to make it viable no doubt).

I will say (in lower Alabama right now) they have new Target store down in this vicinity and they ARE a nice mass merchandiser to walk through. Naysayers or not. Definitely my favorite of that "genre".

You are lucky to have Target expanding your way. Best Buy may head your way one of these days too but don't pin your hopes on Circuit City. CC is having a tough go in lower 48. In this tough economy, there are rumors CC may close shop or certainly, reduce their operation. Sears and K-Mart are fast becoming dinosaurs. I've left Linen and Things this morn where they are having a liquidation sale.

Kind of mixed emotions on the big stores, they have brought the prices down in Alaska, but also they put the mom and pop places out of busness because they don't have the buying power to compete.

Having said that, there were also a lot of the mom and pop places that gouged because they were the only game around.

It is nice to go to Lowe's or Home Depot to get supplies that in the past, were two to three times more than what was charged before they opened up by other "Local" stores.

I would like to see a K-mart but target is kind of in the same line with Fred Myers who seem to have the monopoly here in fairbanks. I still do all my shopping at walmart. I furnished half my cabin for $300 last weekend. But i also went to value village for some things :P

Apparently the economy has delayed the Fairbanks Target.

Target Postpones Fairbanks Store Opening - wcco.com (http://wcco.com/local/target.fairbanks.store.2.910767.html - broken link)

I like their housewares, they are more stylish than Walmart or Fred Meyers.
